NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority is changing lane closures on the Newport Pell Bridge after a massive backup during the evening commute Tuesday.

Traffic on the westbound side had been reduced to a single lane for about 1,000 feet on the Newport side of the bridge. The lane closure was originally slated to be in effect 24 hours a day from Monday until Thursday.

However, after massive delays Tuesday night, RITBA said both westbound lanes would be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the evening rush.

“RITBA sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused during Tuesday evening’s rush hour,” the agency said in a release.

RITBA said the work involves completing the final stage of the concrete safety walk renovations on the north side of the bridge, which has been ongoing during the 2018 construction season.
