SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) — A retired Seekonk Police lieutenant charged with falsifying the hours he worked detail shifts reportedly bragged about his alleged conduct, according to an investigative report obtained by Eyewitness News.

“That’s what a case of beer will get you,” Lieutenant David Dyson is reported to have said, according to an investigative report compiled by Paul L’Italien, a special investigator for the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

L’Italien writes in the report, “This statement was understood within the department to imply that Lt. Dyson did not have to work a full detail to receive an eight hour signed detail slip.”

Dyson was charged last month with one count of larceny over $250 by a single scheme and five counts of false claim for pay by a public employee. Dyson is accused of obtaining $1,240.72 under false pretenses, according to a criminal complaint.

L’Italien’s report says the alleged crimes occurred at the Arcade Avenue/Route 114A  construction site near the Old Grist Mill Tavern between March 2016 and October 2017.

According to the report, when L’Italien questioned the foreman of the construction project about the reported exchange of alcohol for preferential treatment, the foreman said he didn’t know anything about Dyson’s statement and never received a case of beer from him.

The DA’s office alleges Dyson submitted false time sheets on six separate occasions. They say he put in for eight hours of work when he spent fewer than four hours on the job. The investigative report says Dyson was also caught on camera apparently leaving his shift after two or three hours despite billing the department for eight.

Dyson was a member of the Seekonk police for more than two decades before resigning in late June of last year, according to a police spokesperson.

According to town documents obtained by Eyewitness News through a public records request, the Seekonk Police Department paid L’Italien, a private investigator, more than $3,000 for what an invoice lists as an “Independent internal affairs investigation (Lt. Dyson).” L’Italien is the same investigator used by the DA’s office to compile the report submitted on March 27.

Dyson is set to have a summons arraignment at Taunton District Court on May 1. He has not responded to requests for comment.
