EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — An East Greenwich police officer was arrested in Pawtucket over the weekend, the Target 12 Investigators have confirmed.

According to East Greenwich Police Chief Stephen Brown, Officer Mark Edmonds Jr. has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Court records show Edmonds, 25, faces a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (9 mm handgun) in connection with a Sept. 1, 2018 incident, assault and battery by strangulation in connection with an April 3, 2019 incident, and obstructing or damaging a telephone in connection with an incident last Friday.

Brown wouldn’t comment on the details of the case, saying he’s still waiting on reports from Pawtucket Police.

Edmonds has only been on the force for a few months, according to the chief.

Pawtucket Police say Edmonds was arraigned before a bail commissioner on Sunday and released with an order to have no contact with the alleged victim. He’s scheduled to appear in Providence District Court on Thursday.

Target 12 has reached out to Edmonds for comment but he has not yet responded.
