Virginia State Police is investigating a non-fatal shooting involving a Washington County sheriff’s deputy.

VSP says the shooting happened around 6 p.m. Friday.

A 33-year-old woman was hospitalized after she was struck by a bullet while in her home on Woodland Hill Road, according to investigators. They say she suffered serious injuries, but it expected to be OK.

VSP says a 41-year-old man who lives next door was target practicing when a bullet went astray and entered the woman’s house.

Sheriff Fred Newman says the deputy is on leave pending the outcome of Saturday’s shooting.

He says the deputy was off duty at the time of the shooting.

No charges have been placed.
