A sign that sits in front of Greeneville Commons is a sign that brighter days are ahead for the shopping center that now has several shuttered doors and vacant storefronts.

Spokesperson for Brixmor Property Group, Kristen Moore, said they’ve recently announced five new retailers are coming to Greeneville Commons.

Some of these retailers are expected to open their doors for business this year.

“The stores that we’ve mentioned that are coming are Marshalls, Hobby Lobby, Five Below, Ross, Rack Room Shoes and Farm Bureau Insurance,” Moore said.

The current site plans call for three businesses, Marshalls, Five Below, and Hobby Lobby, to move into the former Kmart space.

Across the parking lot, the old J.C. Penney will transform into a Ross Dress for Less.

“We’ve been working on Greeneville Commons, and it’s latest transformation for over a year…we are really trying to address retail voids in general merchandise, apparel, shoes, home furnishings and also fitness,” Moore said.

Moore added that these are all stores described as a ‘first to market concepts’, meaning these retailers are new to Greeneville.

“What we found with smartphone data is that people are coming to Greeneville Commons from up to 20 miles away, that breadth of draw along with these new concepts always stimulates a lot of retailer interest, so we’re seeing a lot of interest from local and national concepts who want to be a part of this transformation of Greeneville Commons,” Moore said.

We also reached out to the Town of Greeneville’s Planning Director, Local Engle.

Engle said the next step is for building inspectors to work with contractors as they begin to bring these businesses to life.
