JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL)- Traffic at one of Johnson City’s busiest intersections should be alleviated thanks to a project that will begin next week.
City officials said they will be adding a traffic signal and increased turn lanes where Peoples Street and Greenline Road intersect.
It will be a three-month long reconstruction project set to begin on Monday, April 22nd.
City Manager Pete Peterson said the project comes at a crucial time.
“With Chick-Fil-A being closed during the traffic construction,” he said, “that will cut out several thousand cars a day that would be traveling through that intersection.”
Peterson adds that this project should also improve traffic flow on North State of Franklin Road.
We’re told Johnson City’s Public Works Department crews will be working at the site from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. as they work to convert the area from a four-way stop to a lighted intersection.
“Peoples Street is already a high traffic area and we’ve studied ways to improve flow for a while now,” said Public Works Director Phil Pindzola. “With additional development on the horizon at the former Kmart property, it’s important to prepare for even more volume.”
During the project, access to Home Depot, Best Buy, and stores in Johnson City Crossing will be best accessed through Knob Creek Road.
After work hours, excavation areas will be covered with plates and opened to traffic.
Drivers are asked to use extreme caution in the area.
