WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WJHL)- Tuesday afternoon FBI Richmond along with the United States Attorney’s Office released the name of the hiker killed on the Appalachian Trail over the weekend.

Authorities said 43-year-old Ronald S. Sanchez Jr. of Oklahoma was killed during that violent attack that happened on May 11. 

We’re told the incident is still under investigation.

The suspect in the case, James L. Jordan, 30, of West Yarmouth, Massachusetts appeared in Federal Court in Abingdon on Monday.

Jordan has been charged with one count of murder within the special maritime territorial jurisdiction of the United States and one count of assault with the intent to murder within the special maritime territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

In that news release Tuesday, authorities said they would not be releasing the identities of those hikers who survived the attack and that they ask that, “please respect the privacy of these hikers as they heal from the physical and emotional wounds sustained during last weekend’s incident.”
