The vineyard is located in the heart of the terroir of St Julien. On one of the most beautiful hilltops of Garonne gravel, facing the Gironde, the clay-gravelly subsoil makes it possible to perfectly regulate the vagaries of the weather throughout the year. Plowing is traditional, without weeding or herbicide. The vines are mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (74%), Merlot (23%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).

The harvest is entirely done by hand. After destemming, the berries are meticulously sorted, crushed and placed in thermo-regulated wooden vats, according to their plots. The alcoholic fermentation lasts from 7 to 10 days and the extraction is always respectful of the juice by adjusting the number of pumping overs according to the cuvées and the vintages. The maceration is about 3 weeks then the flow in barrels is done batch by batch.

The nose is gourmand, elegant and offers a small richness as well as a fine grain. It reveals notes of ripe strawberries, crushed blackberry and small notes of chocolate combined with slight hints of caramelization as well as a very discreet hint of Sichuan pepper and tonka bean. The palate is fruity, elegant, well-balanced and offers a beautiful definition, an acidulous frame, a beautiful juiciness, suavity, a good structure, a beautiful precision, freshness as well as a fine minerality almost saline (in the background). On the palate this wine expresses notes of crushed blackberry, fleshy/ripe strawberry and small notes of fleshy/ripe cherry associated with fine touches of cassis, licorice as well as slight hints of violet, tonka bean, spices and a subtle hint of undergrowth. Tannins are elegant. A very fine chews in the background. Good length.

As so often, Léoville-Barton stands out for its style and elegance. With fresh fruit and acidity allied to generous tannins, it sums up the character of the 2004 vintage. Very classic in Bordeaux terms: not hugely powerful, but delicious.

(2005) Very deep, opaque crimson/black. Dark and sonorous nose, with lots of creaminess of blackcurrant, and a polished, slightly cedary old polished wood note. The palate displays very good sweetness of fruit. A deep, sweet, core of pure cassis drives through the mid-palate, with a medium-bodied but quite robust and full texture. That creaminess persists, and the polished tannins and very pure, clean acidity give a crispness to the finish. Spice and a touch of polished, coffeeish oak support.
