After a dry and cold winter, flowering took place early June under good conditions. Beginning of summer was very hot and stormy. Then August followed with cooler temperatures. This September was the hotest and the rainiest one of the last 50 years. These weather conditions allow the berries to get a good ripeness ; however a painstacking selection was required in the vines and on sorting tables.

The grapes are kept for 12 hours in a cold room at 7°C before passing through the optical sorter. Vinification by parcel in stainless-steel temperature-controlled tanks, filled by gravity - alcoholic fermentation with pumping over and punching down - malolactic fermentation in tanks (75%) and barrels (25%)

La Gaffelière, now under the expert guidance of Saint-Emilion's guru Stéphane Derenoncourt, is producing serious wine. None more so than this firmly closed but powerful and dense 2006. Bitter chocolate and dark tannins come together to form a shell covering the weight of the fruit. It will probably always be firm, but the black currant fruit flavors will come through eventually—maybe in 5–7 years.

Intense colour. Clean and deep nose dominated by red fruit on a delicate, discreet oaky base. Powerful and mellow palate, full bodied with character. Pleasant and expressive vintage. Still young, promising.

(2007) Solid fruitiness here, with a rounded appeal. On the palate very well mannered and elegant, with very good fruit ripeness and a nicely refined, ripe tannin structure. Quite sensuous and deep. Very good.
