COST: There is no fee for the seminar series.  Regional Training Center (RTC) Grant funds are available to cover the cost of CME for appropriate Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Coalition (HEPC) attendees that work in the Western, Central New York, Capital District and Metropolitan Area Regions of NYS (excluding NYC).
We ask that you only request CME if your NYS Licensed Profession or NYS BEMS requires continuing medical education for license/certification renewal. This may include physicians, mid-level providers, EMTs and paramedics.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The 2020 Healthcare Coalition Emergency Management Webinar Series: WRHEPC Pediatric Emergency Preparedness Seminar will provide a broad overview of potential care needs for the pediatric patient involved in an emergency/disaster situation. The webinar series will include information for medical, trauma and crisis response specific to the most vulnerable population in any emergency event, children.

This virtual Pediatric Emergency Preparedness Seminar consists of 6 live webinar sessions. Attendees can select to attend one or multiple sessions.
All sessions will be from 9:00am - 10:00am

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  • Develop improved healthcare outcomes of our pediatric population by increasing quality of care through pediatric focused education for our community healthcare partners
  • Identify sentinel injuries and early recognition of child abuse
  • Apply the knowledge gained in airway management during pediatric respiratory emergencies, initial burn treatment, sepsis and mental health

TARGET AUDIENCE

This virtual seminar series is targeted to a broad cross section of Hospital, Diagnostic and Treatment Center professionals, First Responders, Public Health and Emergency Managers that may be involved in any emergency situation requiring emergency response, medical care and short or long term clinical support of children

                   Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk in Primary Care Settings - David Kaye, MD

                   - Describe an organized approach to the assessment of the suicidal adolescent
                   - Understand a method to triage suicide risk
                   - Identify ways in which your practice setting can support caring for depressed teens

                   Burn Treatment - Kathryn Bass, MD
                   - Understand the nomenclature around describing burns
                   - Understand the expected rate of wound healing in various depth burns
                   - Understand the options for wound closure and their specific outcomes

                  - Be familiar with what a work up for abuse may consist of
                  - Identify team members in the response to child abuse

                   Pediatric Emergency Airway Management - Bree Kramer, DO

                   - Prepare emergency medicine clinicians for management of pediatric intubations
                   - Describe common pitfalls when endotracheally intubating children
                   - Avoid and recognize potential airway failure and catastrophic consequences

                   SESSION 5: November 10, 2020 - 9:00am - 10:00am
                   Pediatric Shock: How to Tell if its Sepsis or Trauma - Amanda Hassinger, MD
                   - Describe the subtle features of a child in shock
                   - Determine the difference between shock from trauma and septic shock
                   - Discuss latest epidemiologic and outcomes data on pediatric septic shock versus trauma

                   SESSION 6: November 24, 2020 - 9:00am - 10:00pm
                   Pediatric Mock Code and Mock Trauma - Tiffany Fabiano, MS, CPNP

                   - Identify proper components and importance of a MIST report and pre-notification

                   - Identify upper airway obstruction and proper treatment
                   - Demonstrate PALS and ATLS assessment
                   - Review transfer guidelines for EMS and the non-trauma facilities
