The pay of a British charity boss has been branded “obscene” after it rose to almost £434,000 in a year.

Simon Cooke, the chief executive of Marie Stopes International, saw his base salary rise from £173,067 to £217,250. In addition he received a performance-related bonus of the same amount, compared with a bonus of £127,465 in 2017.

The charity offers contraception and abortions to women in 37 countries as well as running 60 abortion clinics in Britain. It recruited Mr Cooke, who has a background in international marketing, in 2013 when he was chief executive of Supermax, a razor-blade company based in Dubai.

Marie Stopes sought to justify the remuneration deal by saying that it had helped more women than ever before last year.
