Learning about Teaching Science from the Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic shows the critical need for all students to learn science. They must be prepared for a lifetime of science decisions, including some very serious ones. This course is designed to guide participants to answer two essential questions:
1) What does living in a pandemic tell us about the need to learn science and how science should be taught?
2) How does teaching the three dimensions of Alabama’s science standards guide a shift to a pedagogy rich in student engagement, deep conceptual understanding, and real-life application?
Audience: 6-12 Teachers

Shaking Up the Learning: From Static to Dynamic
During this course, we will look at the WHY behind moving from static to dynamic teaching using Kasey Bell's book Shake Up Learning. Participants will be assigned specific chapters to read independently before each session. As a group, we will discuss and reflect on the new learning from the text. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge of what effective integration looks like in a dynamic learning environment by identifying shifts needed to move from a static to a dynamic learning environment. There will be an option to participate in a continued virtual book study. The FIRST 5 participants that register will get a free copy of the book.

Counting Collections Through the Elementary Years
Counting is fundamental to learning mathematics in elementary school. It supports the development of a deep understanding of numbers, providing the core foundation for understanding place value, how numbers are composed and decomposed, and how they are related to one another. A deep understanding of numbers allows students to operate on them in powerful ways. This session helps teachers understand counting and its application across elementary grades, as well as develop tools, strategies, and routines that support a deep understanding of numbers through counting.
