Four Pa. theaters receive award from international women's playwrights group

Four Pennsylvania theater companies were among the recipients of the 50/50 Award from the International Centre for Women Playwrights.

The ICWP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women playwrights around the world. Their 50/50 Award honors theater companies that have produced a season of work where the number of plays written by women equal those written by men.

And to that end, they have selected 62 companies from the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Finland, Singapore and South Africa, out of 102 nominated theaters.

In our state, the City Theatre Company of Pittsburgh, Off the Wall Productions of Carnegie, People's Light in Malvern and Open Stage of Harrisburg were all selected. All but People's Light had been previously honored with this award.

Stuart Landon, producing artistic director of Open Stage of Harrisburg, announced that his first season leading the company would be dedicated to lifting up women's voices.
