Leo F. Fettig, 95, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019 at home under the care of Altru Hospice.

Leo Frank Fettig was born October 23, 1923 in Grand Forks, ND the son of Leopold and Frances (Kraft) Fettig. He was raised and attended attended school in Grand Forks and except for 2 ½ years in the Navy, Leo resided in Grand Forks all his life. In 1939, he began working at the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp near Dunseith, ND and helped to build the International Peace Gardens.

Leo enlisted in the United States Navy on October 1, 1943 at Grand Forks and during World War II, served aboard the USS Nicholas in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged from active military service on December 17, 1945 at Minneapolis, MN. He returned to Grand Forks and was employed with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 43 years and retired as an engineer with Amtrak. Leo married Ruth Swenson from Fordville, ND in 1943. Ruth preceded him in death in 1997. In 2004, he married Carol (Ostern) Hadland. He enjoyed dancing, building houses, golfing, traveling, gardening, reading and visiting with people. He was a member of the American Legion Post 157 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Karon (Sinclair) Short and Dianne (David) Litzinger; step-children, Kathy (Troy) Rugroden and Paul Strinden; grandchildren, Ron (Julie) Deitz Jr., Stepanie (Brett Reese), Christopher (Amber) Litzinger, Casey (Lindsay) Litzinger, Jodee (Tim) Grimes; 3 step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Sidney, Anna, Victoria, Heather, Addison, Cade and Leo and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Susan Deitz; a son-in-law, Ron Deitz; a great grandson, Zeke; 5 brothers and 6 sisters.

Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2019 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel, Grand Forks, ND.
Family Greeting: One hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Tuesday.
Interment: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND, in the summer.
Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the United States Navy Reserve.
