Research Activities

All students in the department have opportunities to engage in research with faculty. Research in the department includes exploring the very small with nanotechnology and nuclear physics and developing materials to improve solar cells. Research in mathematics includes scientific computing, data science for social justice, and quantum groups.

Degrees

Academic programs can be tailored to provide preparation for graduate study, employment in industry or government, or licensure for secondary school teaching. Our programs provide preparation in theory and applications, including computational science, data science, and engineering.

Students can design their physics undergraduate program to include a concentration of elective courses in physics, science, or other disciplines.  We also offer an engineering physics concentration program with elective courses in materials science and electrical engineering.

You can earn two degrees by spending three years at NCCU to earn either a Physics or Mathematics B.S. degree and then spend two years at NC State to complete an Engineering B.S. degree program. The engineering programs include computer, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as computer science.

The Master of Science degree program in Mathematics includes coursework and a required project or M.S. thesis. The program prepares the student for a doctoral degree program or employment in government or industry.
