Late Thursday, House Democrats conducting an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump released text messages provided to Congress by Kurt Volker, the former special envoy to Ukraine who spent more than eight hours testifying behind closed doors on Capitol Hill Thursday.

The messages show U.S. ambassadors working to persuade Ukraine to publicly commit to investigating Trump’s political opponents and explicitly linking the inquiry to whether Ukraine’s president would be granted an official White House visit.
