News on In-Person CEU Requirement for 2021 Licensure Renewal

Updated: May 27, 2022

As we all begin to observe practices of social distancing in Illinois due to COVID-19, the question of virtual trainings and licensure renewal has been on a lot of minds. Here at the NASW-Illinois Chapter, we have received many questions about the Illinois Department of Financial IDFPR requirement of obtaining 15 continuing education units (CEUs) through in-person trainings.

When addressing the matter with IDFPR, our representative informed us that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, they were issuing a live attendance continuing education variance for professions in renewal periods from March 1, 2020, through July 31, 2020. This variance does not apply to Illinois social workers looking to renew their LSW or LCSW licenses which have a renewal date that falls on November 30, 2021. Read the variance in full here.

More information about the variance can be found at: https://www.idfpr.com/COVID-19.asp. Any additional department-issued information will be updated here as circumstances develop.

Please know that the NASW-Illinois Chapter will continue to monitor and advocate with IDFPR officials and state leaders about issues pertaining to our membership. We will also be ramping up our online virtual trainings in the days ahead as well as resuming in-person trainings when it is safe to do so. Consider supporting our efforts by becoming a member today.
