Covid-19 is a health crisis and an economic crisis facing countries across the world. H. E. the President of Costa Rica and IDS alum, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, discusses the need for national and international responses to the pandemic that do not further delay the urgent progress needed to address climate change and social inequalities.

Costa Rica is a country recognised for its trailblazing policies for environmental sustainability. In 2019 Costa Rica received the Champions of the Earth award, the UN’s highest environmental honour, for its role in the protection of nature and its commitment to ambitious policies to combat climate change.

Guest Speaker: H.E. Carlos Alvarado Quesada, President of the Republic of Costa Rica

Special guest: Farhana Yamin, an environmental lawyer and a leading scholar-activist on climate change joined the discussion with H.E. Carlos Alvarado Quesada after his lecture. In her distinguished career she has advised many small island states and worked with LDCs and vulnerable countries, such as Costa Rica, in climate negotiations.
