Universal on Monday announced the nine filmmakers participating in the studio’s 2018 Directors Initiative.
The program is run through the global talent development and inclusion and has the goal of exposing directors to the studio production process as well as creative and production executives across the company.
Launched in 2017 as a weeklong intensive in collaboration with Sundance Institute’s FilmTwo Initiative and AFI Directing Workshop for Women, the initiative will now be expanding to a yearlong program.
“With the outpouring of positive feedback received from last year’s intensive, we’re thrilled to extend our engagement with these breakthrough directors to one full year, allowing more interaction with the filmmakers and the opportunity to expose them to a wider variety of areas that are creating content,” said Janine Jones-Clark, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group senior vp global talent development and inclusion. “The caliber of talent that Sundance Institute, AFI and Filmmasters identify is truly impressive, and we’re grateful to have them as partners in this Initiative.”
Sundance Institute FilmTwo filmmakers participating in the directors initiative include Christina Choe, Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, Nijla Mu’min and Olivia Newman. Participants from AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women directors are Georgia Fu, Milena Govich, Gandja Monteiro and Lorraine Nicholson. And joining the initiative from NBCUniversal international’s filmmasters program is Michael Podogil.
