The scholarships are funded by a donation from Ms Francesca Ball, a former student of Czech Studies at the University of Glasgow.

The scholarships consist of a full payment of your PG student fees, which for UK / 'home' students will be £4712 in the 2023-24 academic session. Irish nationals who are living in the Common Travel Area of the UK, EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status, and Internationals with Indefinite Leave to remain status can also qualify for home fee status. Current research in the area of Czech Studies at the University of Glasgow concentrates on different aspects of 20th century Czech film, media, and literature studies, with a strong research record in topics such as culture and identity, and examination of different discourse-based approaches to self- examination and myth making. Our current and recent postgraduate students' work includes topics such as the use of sound in representation of Holocaust in Central European films, documentaries of the normalisation and post- normalisation era, as well as identity and New Wave cinematography. After successful completion of our postgraduate programme some of our recent graduates have continued with their academic careers in UK or abroad, while others have moved to highly prestigious positions in the non-academic sector.

Comparative and interdisciplinary proposals, which examine Czech topics within Central European and global contexts are especially welcome.

Research proposals in other areas of study relating to the Czech Republic will be also considered. An appropriate supervision team will be advised according to a chosen topic and a candidate’s research interests.

The purpose of the Josef Fronek Scholarship in Czech Studies is to foster international understanding of Czech cinematography, literature and arts, as well as the political and social culture of the contemporary Czech Republic.

Before applying for one of the Josef Fronek MPhil scholarships, students should have applied for and received a conditional or unconditional

acceptance for their proposed programme of study through the online application process: http://www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/arts/graduateschool/prospectivestudents/researchstudy/howtoapply/
