13  POSITIVE CASES OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED in GiLA COUNTY

On April 29 Gila County Public Health Department confirmed  a Globe woman in her 40s is case #13 tested positive for covid-19; the  report adds she had miimal contacts -- and transmission has been traced to close contact with another known positive.  Case #12 reported last week was a Globe male in his 50s,  also minimal contact with others, but in that case transmission is likely to have been community spread.  During April one case was confirmed  in Hayden-Winkelman, 5  in Payson and a total of 7  in Globe and four -- these remain under investigation by Public Health professionals.  Only one of the 13 patients was hospitalized,  he has been released to continue recovering  while self-quantined at home -- others are recovering at home, without requiring hospitalization.

Follow these prevention guidelines to help prevent infection:

• CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing
measures are difficult to maintain -- such as grocery stores and pharmacies
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
• Stay home when you are sick
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, immediately dispose of  tissues in the trash
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
  • COVID-19 is widespread in Arizona with cases now in all 15 counties

• The Gila County Call Center is now open M-F 8-5. Call 928-402-8888 for information, resources and guidance

Gila County's first two cases included a Payson woman in her 40s. This case is not travel related, showing the first evidence of community spread in Gila County.  The patient is employed at the Walmart Supercenter in Payson, and public health investigators are interviewing Walmart management to determine  close contacts the employee may have had during the final weeks of March. Gila County's first confirmed case was also a  Payson woman in her 40s; who self-quarantined and recovered at home.  The first case was deemed travel-related, and  with no evidence of community spread - and  low threat to the community, because the patient followed guidelines to self-isolated since the beginning of her symptoms.

Locally, Gila County's Health and Emergency Management  team continues to vigorously monitor COVID-19; providing daily updates to community leaders and healthcare partners -- accurate information to share with local residents.
“We constantly prepare and plan to deal with air-borne disease in general, which  prepares us well to respond to COVID-19 cases too,” said Joshua Beck, Manager of Gila County’s COVID-19 response team. “Gila County has focused much attention on pandemic planning and preparedness over the past five years; this means that response agencies across Gila County are skilled in coordinating efforts to protect our communities from the threat of diseases like COVID-19. The only way we get through any infectious disease is by cooperation and awareness - keep family members home when they are sick, stay home from work when we are sick, cover our coughs and keep our hands washed. Sounds simple enough, but as a community, these small actions can make all the difference. While we have not had any cases of COVID-19 in Gila County; however, counts continue to rise across  Arizona and we expect to see additional cases - quite possibly here in Gila County.”

Public Health officials reiterated that  most illnesses from COVID-19 have been managable without requiring hospitalization,  and that

Avoid close contact with people who are sick - and avoid crowds. Federal and State health officials advise meetings be limited to ten people or fewerpatients recover at home.
Still ,  they urge residents to take this outbreak seriously,  and follow preventative measures:

Even with family, friends and coworkers who appear healthy maintain a 'social distance' of at least six feet to prevent respiratory infection

-
-      Stay home if you  are at higher risk, such as older adults, because risk increases with age
-      Stay home if you  have serious chronic medical conditions such as heart disease,  diabetes or lung disease
Seniors and those with hronic medical conditions  must take special precautions to reduce their risk of getting sick -- maintaining distance, even  from family and close friends,  will help protect those who are most vulnerable.

Symptoms of COVID-19 are thought to appear within two to 14 days after exposure to the virus and consist of fever, cough, runny nose, and difficulty breathing. Those considered most at risk for contracting the virus are individuals with travel to an area where COVID-19 is spreading or individuals in close contact with a person under investigation for COVID-19. If you recently traveled to an area where COVID-19 is spreading and have developed fever with cough or shortness of breath within 14 days of your travel or have had contact with someone who is suspected to have COVID-19, stay home and call your healthcare provider. If you do not have a healthcare provider, you may need to be seen at your local hospital emergency room/urgent care center. Please call the emergency room/urgent care center to get instructions before going in.
