Law Students

Veterans Legal Corps

Veterans often face complex and intertwined legal problems, many of which stem from physical and mental injuries sustained during military service. When these legal problems go unresolved, they can multiply over time, creating insurmountable barriers to successful civilian life.

Through the Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Veterans Legal Corps (VLC), formerly AmeriCorps JD, Fellows and law students provide legal services that enable low-income and homeless veterans and their families to rebuild their lives. Law students, referred to as “Student Members” are hosted at legal services organizations across the country where they:

  • Provide legal assistance to veterans and their families on issues related to housing, employment, consumer and medical debt, government benefits, child support, and other family law matters
  • Build relationships with community partners, including law schools and staff at VA hospitals, clinics, and veterans centers
  • Deliver presentations on veterans’ rights and benefits, and create educational tools and resources

VLC is an AmeriCorps National program funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service that is open to current law students enrolled in law school who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or lawful permanent residents. Law students must apply directly to the legal services organization of their choice.

Applications for summer 2019 have closed.
