Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, kind and innovative! I am a middle school music teacher in a Title 1, urban school. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, and a few are considered at-risk. I teach students from 6th to 8th grade. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background.
My students love music class and get excited to learn while having fun.
They come every day, ready to learn new things and take chances to grow both personally and academically.
A few years ago, I was trained as a Little Kids Rock Teacher so that I could introduce a different aspect of music to our students. From this Modern Band was born; where students learn to perform rock music from the 50's - the present and understand the in's and out's of putting a band together, improvising and writing a song.
My Project
The new guitar cases will definitely help keep the instruments safe. The students will have more opportunities to take the instrument home to practice. A year ago, several students wanted to take their guitar home. After inspecting the cases, I realized they had been taped more than once. So I set aside one guitar for them to take turns to practice.
Many of my students do not have the resources to purchase their own guitar.
With broken chipboard cases, students can not take the instrument home for fear of damaging it further. New cases will help the students practice at home and develop their "shredding" techniques.
