DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – The city of Durham is looking at obtaining technology that would allow police to locate gunfire in the city almost as it happens.

Already in 2019, gun violence has taken several lives and other victims were wounded, including two teen girls in just two days.

The technology is called ShotSpotter and is already being used in Rocky Mount, where it led officers to a shooting death scene on Sunday.

On Monday, a Durham police spokesman told CBS 17 that police chief Chief C.J. Davis was considering implementing the ShotSpotter system.

Rocky Mount police also used the technology in a Sept. 2018 gun killing.

ShotSpotter is a series of microphones designed to detect the sound of a gunshot and pinpoint its location within 25 meters.

Police are then alerted of the location almost instantly.

Goldsboro police said a decrease in crime is thanks in part to ShotSpotter. 

The devices are hidden, but it covers a 3-mile radius and those who live in the area say it’s led to a quicker response time from police.

Police say the technology allows them to get to the scene as quickly as a minute after the shooting. In some cases, officers have been able to arrive at the scene while the shooter is still there.

Goldsboro, Rocky Mount and Wilmington are the three North Carolina agencies that use it.
