Feel like you hear too much about metadata? Not enough? Find it confusing? Of vital importance? Yes to all of the above! In very practical ways, metadata has different implications for different roles in scholarly communications and like so many topics close to us, it can be hard to sift through the available information to find out what it means to you. Regardless of experience, understanding or enthusiasm (or lack thereof), metadata is important to us all and this session aims to show you how

Join our panel of experts to understand the challenges and opportunities for everyone involved in or affected by scholarly metadata (so, pretty much everyone)-authors, editors, librarians, service providers and more. With real-life use cases and a little humour, together we will cover topics like:

• What are PIDs and will we ever see an end to new ones?
• How on earth do I know what’s in my metadata? Or yours?
• Who’s using all of this metadata anyway and for what exactly?
• Why should I care about it?

Chair and Speakers

Chair: Jennifer Kemp, Head of Business Development, Crossref Biography: Jennifer leads the metadata user and service provider programs at Crossref, where she also Co-chairs their Books Advisory Group. Prior to Crossref, she was most recently Senior Manager of Policy and External Relations for Springer Nature. A former librarian, her experience in scholarly publishing began with her work as a Publication Manager at HighWire Press, where she had a variety of nonprofit and commercial publisher clients.
Fran Frenzel, Metadata & Discovery Manager, University of London, Senate House Library Biography: Fran has worked in metadata related roles throughout her library career: starting out on various cataloguing projects in Germany and UK, moving into library assistant and cataloguer roles in UK HE libraries, leading to her current role as Metadata and Discovery Manager at University of London, Senate House Library. She has a strong interest in metadata quality as well as bringing metadata creation and curation efforts from the various parts of the community together.
Sean Harrop, Content Architect, BMJ Biography: Sean has been working with markup languages since 1993. Starting with SGML typesetting at Routledge and then on to developing XML production workflows for the BMJ, where he still fights the good fight. In recent years he has become involved with the challenge of establishing and developing BMJ's content archive and associated services, overhauling BMJ's downstream delivery and metadata capabilities, and establishing BMJ's disaster recovery processes. Or he'll be playing drums/bass/guitar somewhere.
Dr Ian Synge, Principal Consultant, Copyright Clearance Center Biography: Ian Synge is a consultant with CCC specialising in taxonomies and categorisation. He has delivered projects for major international organisations in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia focusing on helping dynamically make sense of large datasets. A longtime enthusiast for knowledge organisation Ian’s PhD thesis focused on the application of taxonomies to naval diplomacy in the late Cold War.
Paige MacKay, Publishing Editor, Ubiquity Press Biography: While completing her MA in Publishing & Information Technology (UCL), Paige became passionate about open access and joined the Ubiquity Press team in 2013. As Publishing Editor, Paige is responsible for managing the book production process, helping clients publish quality online content and beautiful books. When she isn’t working, you’ll find Paige rummaging used book bins, drinking tea, or exploring her home country, Canada.
