SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders campaigned in Salt Lake City Friday afternoon.

His rally held at This Is The Place Heritage Park drew a large crowd. The line of people to get in to the event was was over a mile long, and it’s estimated that around 14,000 people showed up to watch him speak which is almost unheard of here for a presidential candidate of any party.

Senator Sanders joked that he was given misinformation about Utah being a red state because it didn’t look like it today.

During his speech, he talked about the need to invest in education, and tax the rich for what he calls their fair share.

His message has been resonating especially with Millenials who have been voting overwhelmingly for Sanders. Donald Aguirre said it’s also how Bernie has been running his campaign that is getting so much attention.

“He is making the effort to really win the vote of the people, and not the vote of the elite of the Super Delegates, said Aguirre. “He’s running for us.”

Sanders is currently trailing Hillary Clinton in delegates by around 300, that’s why he says the caucus here in Utah is so important to the race.

Utah will caucus on Tuesday along with Idaho and Arizona and that’s why the senator is currently stumping through those states as well.

One of the reasons he’s so confidant right now is because most of the remaining contests are in large blue states where he leads in several polls. He hopes big enough wins will give him the lead in pledged delegates.
