ALEXANDRIA, Va. (ABC7) — A Confederate soldier statue has been removed in Old Town Alexandria Tuesday morning.
The Appomattox statue commemorating Confederate soldiers on Washington Street dates back to 1889. According to the Associated Press, the United Daughters of the Confederacy are responsible for removing the statue.
A spokesman for the city of Alexandria told the AP that the United Daughters of the Confederacy notified the city Monday that it would remove the statue, and that Alexandria's only role was to provide traffic support.
Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson tweeted photos of the statue's removal with a caption that read "Alexandria, like all great cities, is constantly changing and evolving."
Confederate symbols across the South have become targets for vandalism during protests for George Floyd. The AP reports that even longtime defenders of the Confederate monuments are removing them.
