SAU Engineering
High-Powered Rocket Workshop
June 20-23, 2022

Learn engineering design by building a high-powered rocket from scratch and launch it in a competition! Race a remote drone using drone’s-eye view only.

Activities

  • Be part of a team to fabricate a rocket using 3D printing, laser cutting, and various machining processes. Assemble and fly your rocket with a payload (video recording & a micro-controller system to capture flight data).
  • Fly a drone in a race using drone’s-eye view only. Open to rocket participants & others on June 23.  Participants may bring their own drone or one will be supplied during competition.

Eligibility

  • The event is open to undergraduate students and high school seniors. Teachers are welcome.
  • Teachers are encouraged to form a team of 3-4 students. Teacher stipend available, plus team travel.

Cost

  • Free! Includes room & board at SAU campus from June 20 – 23 + Team takes home the rocket following the competition. Sign up individually or as a team.

About

The workshop will provide students with an opportunity to develop engineering design skills through direct application in high-powered rocketry. Teams will be recruited from throughout Arkansas, and spend one week on the Magnolia campus during which they will fabricate different parts of the rocket using 3D printing, laser cutting, and various machining processes. The teams will then assemble, fly their rocket with a payload equipped with video recording and a micro-controller system to capture flight data, and recover asset using an electronic deployment recovery system.

The teams will train on rocket simulators before designing their rockets and building them, and finally submit a report and make a presentation about their project. Participation is free and open to high school and undergraduate students. Teachers from participating schools are encouraged to form teams and provide them assistance during workshop. No prior experience working with high-powered rockets is required.

Funding is provided by NASA through the Arkansas Science Space Grant Consortium, Lockheed Martin and Aerojet Rocketdyne.
