Sesame Street: Ready for School!: A Parent's Guide to Playful Learning for Children Ages 2 to 5 Paperback – September 10, 2019

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

Sesame Street, the most trusted name in preschool education, offers a complete, user-friendly guide to help parents prepare their children, ages 2-5, for academic, physical, and social success.

For the past 50 years,
Sesame Street has stood at the forefront of child development, stimulating and nurturing the minds of preschoolers not only through the iconic TV show, but also through books, games, mobile apps, and community engagement initiatives. With Ready for School!, Senior VP of Curriculum and Content at Sesame Workshop Dr. Rosemarie Truglio shares all the research-based, curriculum-directed school readiness skills that have made Sesame Street the preeminent children's TV program, and that every parent needs in order to get their preschooler ready for lifelong learning.

Each of the book's eight chapters focuses on a key area: language, literacy, math, science, logic & reasoning, social & emotional development, healthy habits, and the arts. An essential dynamic of Ready for School! is its emphasis on the importance of play in a child's learning process. To respond to that need, dozens of "Play & Learn" activities are included to aid parents in educating their children: at the kitchen table, on the bus, in the park, or in the preschool classroom while playing together. In addition, the book recommends scores of hints, tips, ideas for useful products, and deep-dives on more complex topics for parents, all designed to make preparing young kids for school easy and joyful.

This book is a great parenting resource. As a Professor of Child Development and the mother of 4 kids, I generally feel like I know a good amount about parenting and learning, but this book gave me great ideas and easy ways to incorporate fun, playful learning opportunities into everyday life. This book is comprehensive and complete but easy to read and apply to daily life. The book is appealing with Sesame characters and tips and tricks. The only problem is that I am constantly trying to grab it from my two year old who loves to flip through the pages and see all her Sesame friends- she thinks it's a book for her too! :-) Thanks to Sesame and Dr. Truglio for coming out with a great, parenting book that is clearly well-informed, backed in research, and something that any parent could and should use!

It's crucial to take the whole child into account when thinking about their school readiness, which Rosemarie does in this book. There's no better way to learn than through play, and this book also gives concrete information and suggestions on how to do that.

This is a great book~ even for special needs parents. I borrowed this from our public library and liked it so much that I bought it on Amazon. Our daughter is 5 years old and has Down syndrome, and the past two weeks we’ve been using some of the resources listed in this book♥️

Fred Rogers said that "play is really the work of childhood". Most parents don't realize how important play is for young children. It is during play where the crucial learning happens. This is an actionable guide on how to facilitate and encourage play so that your child is prepared for school and the world around them.
