Quohog aquaculture in Brunswick

History

Aquaculture me! was an initiative started by Morgan Cuthbert, an educator at Yarmouth Schools, to get classroom teachers connected to the science and industry of aquaculture.  The hope is to create learning that is place based and focused on local organisms and ecology.

What is the need?

Aquaculture is a powerful and dynamic classroom tool that teachers can use to connect their classroom to communities and practice inquiry-based learning, while aligning with advanced educational standards. Maine is committed to improving science education for all students, with the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards as of the 2019-2020 school year. To meet these standards, educators need local project-based programming that highlights the relationships between science, technology, society and the environment. Aquaculture education incorporates these scientific practices and crosscutting concepts, like chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics, to teach about complex systems that affect our communities and environment. Students are able to explore and understand the current research and science related to aquaculture as they are engaged in hands-on science.
