New namespace for zh-min-nan Wikipedia
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

For Min Nan (Hokkien) language, there are two main writing systems, one Romanized scripts (Lô-má-jī) and one Chinese characters (Hàn-jī). Articles on Hokkien Wikipedia is now written in Lô-má-jī (on main namespace), and Hàn-jī articles can only be written in talk namespace. In order not to mix the Hàn-jī articles with the discussions, we need another new namespace called "Hàn-jī" for users who want to create and edit articles in Chinese characters.

We need the Hàn-jī namespace with same characteristics as the talk (thó-lūn) namespace. Each main namespace, category (lūi-pia̍t) namespace, wikipedia namespace, template (pang-bô͘) namespace, etc. should have a corresponding talk and hàn-jī namespace pages.

Requested name: Hàn-jī

Thanks

@Framawiki this is not zh.wikipedia.org, see notation of that tag

It sounds like adding another "talk/discussion-like" namespace. It probably related to this discussion on Mediwiki. And may also includes parallel systems of Template and Category.

Perhaps just add a new "Hàn-jī" namespace if the original proposed request is too complex? And I think other namespaces such as Template and Category could be treated by adding new namespace aliases.

FWIW:

  1. Adding extra-however-useful "Category (talk)/Template (talk)..." namespaces for another script in same usage don't seem touchable to me, so in theory we could only add Hani translations for namespaces.
  2. Under any of resolutions, the Min Nan Wikipedia will turn into a multi-script Wikimedia site, and Wikidata will have a number of items that P31: Wikimedia permanent duplicated page.
  3. As a translatewiki.net user I should point that the de facto nan translations are mixed by Latin and Hani scripts, would those be splitted like T139010?

Community consensus on Min Nan Wikipedia has been made.

but @Sunshine678 do you have time on this panorama?

@Liuxinyu970226

"Panorama"?

(By downloading and unzip) Those are .po files of TWN nan translations, which you can find some translations are in Hani script

Should you change those to Latin script, or should we split those to nan-hani one and nan-latn one?

Maybe you should split it? I will discuss this with Luuva. But I think "nan-hanji" would be better than "nan-hani".

The hani is ISO 15924 of Hanji. 📦

Okay, I see.

Why still "blocked on community consensus"?

I would support the hani/latn splitting on the translatewiki since they have some different conventions on punctuations, loanwords, word formation etc.

It would be interesting to explore the use of LanguageConverter for this wiki, as @Liuxinyu970226 suggests in T193366.
