✨ Safe Space Training

Opportunity 2027 aims to achieve equity in access, learning outcomes, and success for students from every race, gender, and socioeconomic group. This will require our faculty and staff to be equipped to meet various student needs. Part of goal three, strategy one, is to provide faculty and staff with professional development in cross-cultural understanding to assist in identifying and supporting student needs.

As part of this effort, we will be offering the Campus Pride Safe Space Training Program. This is a nationally recognized program that provides training and signage for institutions committed to supporting LGBTQ students. A Safe Space Program is one of the measures of a supportive campus on the Campus Pride Index.

We are offering a two-hour online version of the Safe Space Training. This online training prepares individuals to understand the importance of a Safe Space, learn terminology and LGBTQ identities and how to be a Safe Space. Participants will receive an official Campus Pride Safe Space certificate with their name upon completion of the full two-hour training.

Trauma Informed Certification Courses

An estimated four in ten children in the U.S. face a traumatic event in childhood, but trauma can happen at any time in our lifespan. Many individuals struggle with the impact of this trauma and it often shows up in our offices as difficulties with connections or behavior concerns. Research has shown that building resilience can help a person overcome these traumas from the past and help us all build communities that are better able to manage the impact of stress and thrive.

All VCCS employees working with students are invited to participate in the course presented by Virginia’s Community Colleges Student Success Center. Come learn the science behind trauma and resilience strategies when working with individuals whose trauma history may not be known. This training is mission critical as we operate in and through the pandemic environment.

The cost for the courses is covered by the Student Success Center for all VCCS employees.

Course 1 – Trauma Informed Campus and Classroom: A 6-hour trauma-informed certification course to help us learn how to deal with the impact of trauma and build resilience, and open another vital path to creating equity for our students.

Learn more and register for the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 cohorts here.

Course 2 – Creating a Trauma Supportive Campus and Classroom: This dynamic, 2-part, 6-hour course will help to transform your classroom, office, department, or family through resilience-based strategies. Using trauma-informed principles, the course teaches individuals to create the positive environment that is essential to lasting success systematically. Dozens of strategies and promising approaches utilized by some of the nation’s finest trauma-informed practitioners will be shared.

NOTE: Attendees must first take, complete, and be certified as Trauma Informed through Course 1 before taking Course 2. All those eligible to take Course 2 will be sent an invitation email when new training dates become available.
