Dear ¡Hágase Contar! Partners and Census Advocates:

Did you know this week is National Health Center Week?

Community clinics and health centers serve millions of patients nationwide, amounting to billions of dollars in needed funding over the next 10 years to provide critical services to Latinos and other community members.

Census data plays a critical role in making sure these community health centers have the resources they need to operate.  More than $800 billion in federal funding was distributed in fiscal year 2016 on the basis of Census-guided data alone, including $361.2 billion in Medicaid funding.

The U.S. Constitution requires the federal government to count every person living in the country every 10 years. The count must include people of all ages, racial and ethnic groups, and citizens and non-citizens.

Every household should complete a census form because participating in the census is our right and responsibility, but most importantly, it helps ensure our communities get the funding they need for education, healthcare, housing, and more.

What is at stake if we do not respond?

Key funding for federal programs that rely on data obtained from the census could be in jeopardy, including:
  • Medicaid;
  • Section 8 Housing Vouchers;
  • Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP); and
  • Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
These are vital programs, critical to supporting the health and well-being of our communities nationwide.

How can you help?

Reach out to your local health centers and community clinics and ask them to join our ¡Hágase Contar! efforts to ensure a full count of Latinos and other hard-to-count communities.  Health centers and clinics can share the below bilingual resources (English and Spanish) to educate their community about the importance of the census:

Let’s work together to ensure a full count of the Latino community in Census 2020!
