Introducing our Music Teacher...Ms. Tejada

Tell us a little about yourself.
This will be my second year teaching at Welby. I've studied vocal performance and music education at CSUN. I've also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, around Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Hawaii. I am currently in the Credential Program at CSUN. Some of my hobbies include hiking, swimming, boxing, making music, and spending time with my family.

Tell us about the music program at Welby this year. How is distance learning different from the previous years?
We are learning about the fundamentals of music, different types of genres of music from different cultures. We are learning to listen to music critically and discuss different elements and composer intents. We are also creating music through some great music resource websites.

Distance learning has made this year look a little different from last year, but we've been able to make the best of it. We've been able to have access to some great online music resources that we would otherwise not have been able to use in person. Although we are not able to play instruments or sing together, students have been able to create their own music and showcase their creativity with their classmates.

Music has been shown to improve social skills, study skills, and creativity in children, not to mention bringing joy. How can parents further their child's love and appreciation of music at home?
Some ways to further a child's love and appreciation of music at home is by watching live performances on YouTube and discussing things that you hear, instruments you see, the lyrics, or what the composer is trying to make you feel. Another way is to make music with your kids and allow them to be creative. If you play an instrument, write a song with them, or if you don't play an instrument you can take a song and create your own lyrics.

What is your favorite genre of music?
My favorite genres of music are jazz, neo soul, gospel, romantic, and of course classical.

In honor of Kindness Week, what songs about kindness and friendship do you love?
Some of my top songs about kindness and friendship are Birds of a Feather by Vulfpeck and the music of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. I grew up watching this show, and I love how he believes that children are capable of understanding and enjoying music. If you listen to the show's soundtrack, the music has complex ideas accompanied by awesome messages.

Learning the Language of Love

Kindness Week and Valentine's day are just around the corner so what better way to integrate the two then to take some time out to learn your child's or partner's Love Language. Why could this be valuable? We tend to express love through the lens of what we need to fill our buckets but when we lead from our own needs we often miss the mark on how best to demonstrate that to our loved ones. Dr. Gary Chapman, a marriage counselor and author of the 5 Love Languages book series believes that we express love to others through five different ways- words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service and gifts. He believes that we tend to lead with one or two of these, and it can be different for each member of your family. Dr. Chapman says, "It's not enough to love your kids, but it is important to communicate that love to a child so that he/she genuinely feels loved." By also being aware of what your own love language is, you can better communicate your needs to others. Visit the 5 Love Languages website and take the quiz that applies to you to learn your loved one's language. When you sign up to their email you also get sent examples for each one so that you could be learning new ideas on how to demonstrate and show love.
