To reduce risk of Covid this Halloween season stay home and do some of the things recommended during our last issue but if you decide that you still want to engage in activities with those outside your home, we wanted to share some ideas to help you reduce some risk.
7 IDEAS TO REDUCE RISK AND HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN WHILE TRICK OR TREATING OR PASSING OUT CANDY
- Reverse trick or treat - Have the child stand in front of the house and have family and friends drive by and try to aim into a basket to throw candy into. A great way to stay social distanced and for the kids to show their costume without leaving your home.
- Proportion bag - If you are the type of person who likes to give out more than one piece of candy. Try pre-packaging it in little favor bags. You can separate them on a table for a child to grab or place directly into their bucket.
- Stake the candy into the ground
- Create a candy chute
- Use a robotic claw or claw grabber to hand out candy
- Avoid direct contact with high touch surfaces such as doorbells or door knocking. Visit homes where people have outdoor set ups to distribute candy in order to reduce touch surfaces and keep at a 6ft distance. Be sure to wear a face mask, and sanitize after touching any surfaces. See CDC recommendations: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays/halloween.html
- Disinfect wrapper or quarantine candy prior to touching and consuming. A sure way to know that candy is Covid safe is to disinfect the wrapper or just have it sit for a few days. Discuss this with your child ahead of time and have a stash at home for them to consume the few days during candy quarantine period.

Ingredients
- 1 large bag of pretzel rods
- 12 ounces of bright green candy coating
- 1 bag sliced almonds
Directions
- Gather the pretzels. Break or cut each rod in half. Or you can use full size rods. They look fun in all different sizes!
- Place the green candy coating in a small but deep microwave-safe bowl (or heatproof cup) and microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after every 30 seconds to prevent overheating and burning. Stir and heat until the candy coating is completely melted and smooth.
- Holding a pretzel rod by the unbroken end, dip it in the green coating until almost all of it is covered, leaving about a 1/2-inch section undipped at the top where you are holding it.
- Place the dipped pretzel on the lined baking sheet. Immediately press one of the almond slices on the tip of the pretzel rod that is coated in green candy coating.
- After all the pretzels have been dipped and decorated, refrigerate the tray for 10 minutes to set the coating completely. After that, the witch fingers can be served on a party tray or be standing up in a mason jar.
