If your shoes could talk....they would tell the story of when you carried boxes into your current home, of when you achieved an accomplishment you worked so hard for, of when life felt like it was weighing you down, they were there to take that next step.

If your shoes could talk...they would tell of when you walked into Welby Way for the first time, of a time when you got knocked down, and they grounded themselves sturdy to help you get back up. A time of laughter and joy playing hopscotch or swinging on the monkey bars. Of the time when you ran that first lap out of breath, and also of when you ran that same lap with ease.

If your shoes could talk....

SHARE THE STORY OF YOUR SHOES
Give the gift of letting someone else have the chance to get to walk in your shoes. By DONATING your USED or NEW SNEAKERS, you give someone else an opportunity to continue the story of those shoes. Drop it off at our marked bin inside the front office at any time throughout the school year. Be part of this fundraiser that also gives back to funding programs at our school.

Want to share the story of your shoes to be featured in our newsletter? Add a little note inside the shoes and we will feature the note with your shoes during our bi-monthly newsletter. Feel free to sign your name or leave it anonymous.

Halloween is approaching and this week we are featuring the creators of the “The Lair on Lederer”, the Hannan Family.
The Hannan Family

Your house was voted the spookiest house in West Hills last year. Can you share a little bit about this?
Last year, the City of West Hills held their first annual decorating competition that included two categories, Scariest and Most Whimsical. "The Lair on Lederer" (our house) won for "Scariest". We received honors from the City Councilman John S. Lee, Jesse Gabriel Assemblyman of the 45th District of the State and The West Hills Neighborhood Council. Plus we even got some yummy Nothing Bundt Cakes!

We have submitted to the same competition this year and are eager for the Judges to get spooked! We did something completely different this year to keep the tradition alive and try to stay in line with the restrictions due to Covid. We made it a full walk through front yard experience with room for social distancing.  Every turn has a spooky surprise! We are a full tribute to Halloween with everything from zombies to clowns and even pirates!

We are open for the full experience every Friday and Saturday night throughout all of October, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at  6707 Lederer Ave. West Hills, CA 91307. Judging this year will be from the 23rd through the 25th with winners announced on the 27th.

Officially the holiday season is upon us. While you may be feeling a sense of grief or loss on what may not be this year, we wanted to make sure that we fill you with new ideas to make sure that you and your children experience a great holiday season, even if it looks a little bit different. Some fun ideas to get in the Halloween Spirit this month.

10 IDEAS AND TRADITIONS FOR THIS HALLOWEEN SEASON

Halloween Themed Books - Yes, reading is a great way to have your child tap into their imagination and experience the fantasy that is Halloween. If you didn't know already, a couple of selected libraries are open for pick up. Visit www.LAPL.org or download the app, and use your library card to search for fun Halloween inspired books. When you put a book on hold be sure to choose the open locations near you. For those who live near Welby the closest ones are, Woodland Hills Branch (Ventura between Shoup and Topanga) or West Valley Branch on (Vanowen between Tampa and Reseda) and they will notify you by text or email to let you know when the book arrives. At that time you call to schedule a time to pick up. The Platt library is open for drop off only so you can always return the book closer to home.

Brain Activating Halloween Themed Activities - This fun Halloween Activity printable has a little bit of everything, including a Scategories  game you can play as a family. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3TmdKv-sx60bk9vX2d2R1c0OGM/view

Home Scavenger Hunt - Have kids go on a scavenger hunt in the comforts of your own home. Print the clues, and even check out the hint ideas. Everything you need to know to make this fun and simple activity a blast is through the link. Just print, hide and  have a special treat waiting at the end. https://picklebums.com/images/printables/picklebums_halloweenhunt.pdf

Mystery Treat - Buy a variety of different chocolate and candy treats. Blind fold the person and have them guess what they are eating. If you have a few people you can keep them in another room and see how many they each get correct. You can get creative by having a smell test first and see if they can distinguish by smell.

Mummy Wrap - Now that toilet paper is no longer a hot commodity at stores, take turns wrapping each other as mummy's. You can either see how fast someone can do it, or who can make the most creative wrap.

Halloween Movie Night - Watch some fun family friendly Halloween movies together. Some examples are:
  • Charlie Brown - It's a great Pumpkin
  • Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie
  • Hocus Pocus
  • Halloweentown by Disney
  • Curious George Boofest
  • Casper
  • Spookie Buddies
Be sure to check reviews for the movie before watching to make sure that it is appropriate for your child. A great site for that is www.commonsensemedia.org

Come Up with Fun Family Halloween Costumes - See how creative you can get and then have fun taking selfies with each other. Schedule a zoom or costume car parade with your friends to share what you have dressed up as.

Pumpkin Walk - A great excuse to get moving. Walk around the neighborhood and see how many pumpkins you can count. (Parenting tip: drive around the neighborhood ahead of time to see the best route to take on your walk).

“Boo” Your Neighbors - Similar to reverse trick-or-treating except it’s anonymous. You ding-dong-ditch a plate of goodies to a family member or neighbor with a note attached, saying they’ve been Boo’d.

Paint or Carve Pumpkins - Get creative and send us your pictures.

Prepare Halloween Inspired Treats (see below for examples).

In our next issue we will focus on a few more ideas to have a safe social distance Halloween.
