The Nevada Republican Party and Republican National Committee are suing Clark County officials for public records related to the June primary election.
In a lawsuit filed Monday, the state and local GOP asked a court to force the county to turn over any records related to the county's decision to open more in-person polling places and to mail absentee ballots to inactive voters.
The changes came after Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske announced the June primary would be conducted mostly by mail because of the coronavirus. Nevada's Democratic Party then filed a lawsuit challenging the rules, including that Nevada's 17 counties provide at least one in-person polling place and that absentee ballots would be sent to all “active” voters who participated in at least one of the last two federal elections.
Clark County then agreed to add additional in-person polling sites and to send ballots to active and inactive voters.
Republicans contend Clark County commissioners should have held a public meeting to discuss the decision and are seeking related records. They say in their lawsuit that after filing a records request they received some documents but they believe more records exist and should be turned over.
“This lawsuit is based upon suspicions not facts and we expect to prevail,” Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said in an emailed statement.
