Homemade Cloth Face Coverings

Homemade Cloth Face Covering Donations

Intermountain is now supporting and accepting donations based off the approved Intermountain pattern from the community and our caregivers for homemade cloth face coverings. Face coverings that don’t follow the pattern will cause issues during the laundering and distribution process.

We will be using the cloth face coverings for both our patients (non-respiratory) and our caregivers who do not directly interact with patients or visitors. If you have reusable face coverings, please visit our donation locations page for a list of donation sites. Donations will be accepted beginning Wednesday, April 15.

Donated cloth face covering will be laundered and sanitized before being distributed. When reusable cloth face coverings are available, they will be shared with caregivers in non-patient/visitor facing areas, patients, and permitted visitors.

Are Homemade Cloth Face Coverings a Good Idea?

Are you wondering if homemade face coverings are a good idea? The CDC recommends that homemade cloth coverings—when combined with good hand hygiene and social distancing—can help slow the spread of COVID-19 in a community. Face coverings can limit the spread of germs from the face covering wearer to others by helping block large droplets from coughs and sneezes.

Intermountain Healthcare is proud to partner with Latter-day Saint Charities and University of Utah Health to provide the global community with informational resources as we work together to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Face Covering Informational Guides

As partners, we have developed informational guides regarding homemade cloth face coverings as well as a pattern for how to make a face covering. These PDFs can be downloaded below:

Face Covering Dos and Don'ts

  • Don’t hoard clinical procedural masks. Our healthcare workers need to help take care of our community.
  • Don’t stop social distancing. A face mask or cloth covering will not completely protect you from the coronavirus. However, a homemade cloth face covering can provide light protection and remind you not to touch your face. It also helps prevent the spread of germs from you to others.
  • Do wear a face mask or cloth covering if you have symptoms of COVID-19, which include fever, shortness of breath, a new cough, and muscle aches.
  • Do wear a face mask or cloth covering if you are in a high-concentration area of COVID-19 cases.
  • Do wear a face mask or cloth covering to remind yourself not to touch your face and to help prevent spread of germs from droplets.
  • Do follow all the guidelines for proper use of a face mask or cloth covering detailed in “How to Use a Face Covering.”
  • Do wash your hands. Cleaning your hands is still your best protection against COVID-19.

We encourage all community members to engage in social distancing, practice good hand hygiene, and stay home if they are sick. Properly wearing homemade cloth face masks is another way community members can help support global health. As we work together as a community, we can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
