Career Peer Advisor: 2019-2020

CANDIDATES WITHOUT FEDERAL WORK STUDY ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY, BUT THOSE ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL WORK STUDY WILL BE PREFERRED

Job Summary:
All student staff are essential to the daily operations of the University Career Center, which provides career services to all 6,800 Georgia College students. Career Peer Advisors (CPAs) are peer mentors who help make career services more accessible to students. CPAs promote career services by conducting resume and cover letter reviews and facilitating presentations, workshops, and outreach events. CPAs establish liaison relationships with student organizations, faculty, staff, students in their respective majors, and other university departments. CPAs provide customer service and assist with the Career Center’s front desk operations

Essential Duties:
·    Conduct individual and group peer advising with students at scheduled times in the Career Center including resume, CV, and cover letter reviews, Handshake promotion/advising, and career fair preparation
·    Promote Career Center programs, workshops and drop-in hours through advising interactions, creating flyers, social media posts, and/or other marketing efforts
·    Present Resume Writing for Beginners workshops in collaboration with full-time advisors
·    Assist with front desk operations including greeting customers in the office (students, employers, faculty, off-campus guests, alumni), scheduling appointments, answering phones, and completing other administrative tasks as assigned by all full-time office staff
·    Provide excellent customer service to all who interact with the Career Center
·    Represent the Career Center by assisting with career fairs and other large events
·    Establish relationships and collaborate with faculty, staff, students in their respective majors, student organizations, and university departments to help them learn how the Career Center can help them or their students and to present career workshops as requested
·    Attend weekly staff meetings, designated training days and attend scheduled office hours

Minimum Qualifications:
·    Must have at least a 2.5 GPA
·    Have work availability between 12-5 pm at least 2 days a week Monday-Thursday
·    Any major interested in peer advising, helping professions and/or customer service roles - must have a desire to help others
·    Willing to speak in front of groups for outreach opportunities
·    Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office
·    Must have successfully completed one full semester at GC and have at least two more semesters remaining at time of application
·    Exceptional time-management skills
 
Expectations:
·    Arrive on time for office hours and complete weekly assigned office hours. Hours per semester may vary depending on office need, number of events, and CPA availability
·    Complete the Career Planning Milestones which includes Handshake, mock interview, resume review, career assessment, and strategic career planning
·    Attend all training sessions and regular meetings
·    Maintain an office notebook with training materials and notes on procedures
·    Be available to facilitate evening or weekend presentations as needed
·    Engage with Career Center programs and services to promote them to students
·    Demonstrate professionalism while working in and representing the office/university. This includes having a neat, well-groomed appearance, appropriately using personal social media accounts, cell phones, and other electronic devices, and communicating professionally in-person, through email, and on the phone
