Letter of Recommendation Writing Workshop:

How do you know whether you are writing the strongest letters of recommendation possible? Do you choose adjectives to avoid stereotyping students? Do you adjust the length or format based on the type of application? Do you know when and how to say no to a student? Join Dr. Julye Bidmead and Dr. Anna Leahy, who have read hundreds of recommendation letters from faculty, to share and discuss best practices that foster both our students' success and the university's reputation. Leave with tips you can use whether the student is applying for an institutional grant from the Center of Undergraduate Excellence or the Office of Graduate Education or applying to graduate school, an external fellowship, or a job.

Diversifying the Faculty, Search Committee Workshop:

Three years ago faculty representatives, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Faculty Affairs, and HR collaborated to develop a search committee training focused on what we can do collectively to increase diversity among our faculty applicant pool. In response, faculty and staff who shared this commitment, trained and helped develop a session designed to build awareness among faculty who serve on search committees about what we can do to increase diversity in our candidate pool as well as make sure that the candidates and subsequent hires feel welcome and included as members of the campus community.

NOTE: If you are sitting on a search committee this year and did not participate in this program last year, your attendance is required even if you completed the training once before. This session is faculty led, and open dialogue is encouraged and invited. Your input is vital to assure that we continue to address key challenges we are facing, therefore attendance by all faculty, not just those currently on search committees, is encouraged. We share in brief the general search process to maintain legal compliance as well.

Supporting Students in Distress Workshop:

What do you do when you have a student in distress? What resources does the campus offer? Did you know that we had a case worker on staff at Chapman to help with some of these issues? Chapman Student Services has staff to help with students in crisis, whether it is academic, emotional or financial. Come and learn about some of these resources including SCIT (Student Concern Information Report) and how to support students in distress.

Active Shooter Workshop:

This workshop is designed to define various shooter situations and provide general strategies for survival in the event of an on campus active shooter situation. What resources are available? What do public safety and police prepare for?  Discuss pre-planning for your department, area or classroom.
