Curriculum Reform

NESA is reforming the K–12 curriculum for implementation to ensure every student develops strong foundations for learning, life and work.

Changes to the School Developed Board Endorsed Course program from 2021

An official notice was published in NESA News on 25 January 2021 (NESA 3/21).

Stage 5

SDBECs in Stage 5 are no longer endorsed by NESA, except for courses in braille.

Schools may continue to develop their own Stage 5 courses, but courses completed after 2022 will not be included on NESA credentials.

Stage 6

Stage 6 SDBEC proposals are assessed against new endorsement criteria from 2021.

School Developed Board Endorsed Courses (SDBECs) are designed by school(s) when the curriculum needs of their students cannot be accommodated by:

  • Board Developed Courses or
  • Content Endorsed Courses (CECs) or
  • Vocational Education and Training Board Endorsed Courses (VET BECs).

Applying for a School Developed Board Endorsed Course

A course proposal application for a new SDBEC, or one being renewed must satisfy the endorsement criteria and provide supporting evidence.

The application closing date for SDBECs commencing in 2025 is Friday 12 April 2024.

Endorsement period

Successful SDBEC applications will be endorsed for 2 years with the possibility of an extension for another 2 years. School(s) that want courses to continue to be credentialled after the endorsement period has expired must submit a new course proposal application.
