Welcome to the Summer Urban Health Fellowship (SUHF) Undergraduate Application! This is a six week pipeline program that aims to introduce students to the importance of Community Based Primary Health Care. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be having a virtual version of our SUHF program this year. However, there will be a few optional in-person activities available during our program. You will learn skills in community needs assessment and implement and evaluate innovative programs to accompany communities in their struggle for justice. Students will also learn about health policy advocacy and community health education.


The program has six main components that are listed below, however, due to the virtual nature of the program this year we will be making some adjustments:

MENTORING: Be a mentor to other premedical undergraduate as well as high school students.  Form lasting relationships that will guide and encourage our youth towards community leadership and higher education.

PUBLIC HEALTH/ SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS: Covering the basics and current issues we face in providing health to our nation's underserved communities.

COMMUNITY BASED PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH: Introduction to research methods, data analysis and interpretation. Recent research has been presented at national forums. This year's research will focus on the impact of COVID on our communities and vaccine hesitancy.

COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION TALKS: Work with other students to organize virtual presentations and facilitate dialogues on health promotion and prevention with multiple families and youth.

HEALTH FAIRS: Usually all of our students plan and hold a health fair in Wilmington in order to provide a port of
entry into our health care safety net of providers to hundreds of uninsured and underinsured families. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we will be aiming to have different hands on opportunities available for students.

FOOD PHARMACY (OPTIONAL): Students have the opportunity to staff food and PPE distribution to Harbor UCLA patients and community.

CLINICAL PRECEPTING (OPTIONAL): Possible clinical opportunity to shadow Family Physicians in an underserved area. These may involve clinical and other street medicine opportunities, as well as, clinical simulations.

HEALTH SUMMIT: All components are brought together at the end of the program when students present and make recommendations to local, state and federal health leaders at our annual health summit.

Application Deadline: May 10th, 2021 at 5pm.
 We will start sending acceptance letters by May 26th, 2021.

Fellowship dates: June 14th, 2021 - July 23rd, 2021

Location: Our program will be hosted on the online Zoom platform, with the exception of a few in-person activities.  

Time Commitment: Full-time with some weekend and evening commitments.
