Management academics against anti-Black racism*
Management bridges disciplinary boundaries. We study business, government, information and data, and the natural environment with the aim of offering thoughtful, context-specific approaches to society’s quotidian as well as its thorniest problems. In our classrooms and through our research, we contribute to the character-building process of our future leaders and policymakers.  As academics who embrace this interdisciplinary project, we join others in sounding the alarm on the recent instances of racial intimidations and police violence against Black People on Turtle Island, in what is currently known as Canada and the United States.

These occurrences of extreme violence by the police can no longer be considered as isolated or specific to a location but rather a general pattern of treating members of the black community inhumanly. From over-policing to large disparities in sentencing along racial lines, systemic injustices continue to produce results that we cannot ignore. While police forces are considered guardians that ensure the safety of some, they are a repressive force for others. The powers to carry out these brutalities, and the lack of accountability for these personal and systemic harms, are embedded within the foundations of our government and social and organizational structures with the complicity, tacit or not, of civil society. These foundations must be urgently uprooted.  We believe that we have a critical role to play in this uprooting by denouncing the identified disparities and abuses and proposing sound policies.

We have a moral obligation to go outside our comfort zones and to challenge ourselves to side with the oppressed. We acknowledge that brutalities against and murders of Black Canadian and Americans—from Amadou Diallo to George Floyd, from D’Andre Campbell to Andrew Loku—are the product of ongoing systemic racism and regulation rooted in white supremacy and the bloodied histories of slavery and colonialism.  These murders remind us of the historical, deep-rooted, and lethal impact of anti-Black racism and intersecting oppressions, including gender and gender expressions, that contribute to the dehumanization, pathologizing, disappearance, and murder of Black people. That anti-Black racism manifests in our relationships and institutions, our workplaces, and our friendships.  It creates harms including workplace discrimination, micro invalidation, and targeted incivilities.

As professors in the varied disciplines that inform management (including, among others, professors in business, information management, public administration and public policy, and environmental and resource management faculties), we are obligated to confront the assumptions, power dynamics, and biases embedded in organizational structures, our human engagements with individuals and communities, and how we formulate policies. Without conscious and ongoing commitment to anti-racism, we participate, sometimes knowingly, sometimes unconsciously, in the systemic violence inflicted on Black bodies and dehumanizing workplace practices on an everyday basis.

Studying, researching, and teaching management without addressing some of our most egregious societal flaws, particularly anti-Black racism, creates gaps, or worse, harms in the creation and dissemination of knowledge.   We risk enabling persistent wealth poverty and income inequality of Black Canadians and Americans; ignoring or undervaluing the contribution of Black labour and degradation of the environmental endowments of Black communities; producing data that erases Black lives with the consequence that government policies either ignore or worse exacerbate the living conditions and health of Black Canadians and Americans; perpetuating racism in organizational structure and culture in the businesses, governments and other organizations that our alumni will go on to contribute to and lead; and excluding or marginalizing Black colleagues and students from our institutions.

We make a commitment to act according to the principles set out below and call upon our colleagues to do the same:

• We will educate ourselves about how dispossession, subordination, and inequality inform the interactions we have with each other and within organizations and we will attend to that education in conducting our research;
• We will introduce material in our classrooms that reflects a diversity of experiences and analytical frames, including material that centres the lives of Black Canadians and Americans;
• We will accept responsibility to help identify, reveal, and resist anti-Black and colonial inequities within our collegiate, classrooms and universities in order to transform institutions and policies that have led to violence and the perpetuation of inequalities. That responsibility includes hiring and including of Black faculty and administrative staff, fostering the enrollment and success of Black students, and adopting policies and practices that serve as bias disruptors; and
• We will embrace a commitment to racial justice and celebrate differences as we work to displace apathy and recover from a societal amnesia that eradicates substantial harms.
