Symposium Content
The purpose of the symposium is to build knowledge around foundational preventative and responsive practices to enhance readiness to meet social, emotional and behavioral needs of students. The presentations will strengthen practitioner skills related to culturally responsive practices and positive and proactive strategies to meet social, emotional and behavioral needs of students while learning. Research-supported practices for creating a structured learning environment, building relationships with students and recognizing behavior will be presented in a make-and-take session to foster learning, reflection and application.
Participants — The symposium is appropriate for special-education teachers, paraprofessionals, general education teachers, behavior analysts, related service providers, preservice professionals, families and anyone else interested in supporting children.
Keynotes
Shanna Hirsch, associate professor, Clemson University
Shanna Eisner Hirsch, Ph.D., is an associate professor of special education in Clemson University's College of
Education. She is a graduate of Vanderbilt University (M.Ed.) and the University of
Virginia (Ph.D.). Dr. Hirsch's scholarship is represented by two main lines of research
related to special education with a focus on emotional behavioral disorders (EBD):
- Identifying effective instructional methods for preservice and in-service teachers’ classroom management and functional assessment-based interventions and
- Creating effective and sustainable university-district research-practice partnerships.
Across these lines, she draws on theories rooted in applied behavior analysis, practice-based professional development, community engagement and multimedia design theory. To date, she has published over 55 journal articles and delivered over 100 conference presentations and webinars. Dr. Hirsch is an elected board member of the Association of Positive Behavior Supports and serves on several editorial boards (e.g., Behavioral Disorders, Exceptional Children and Intervention in School and Clinic). She is a co-principal investigator on Project FRaME (Using Feedback, Reflection and Multimedia to Teach Evidence-Based Practices in Classroom Management). Project FRaME (Dr. Michael Kennedy, PI) is a four-year Institute of Education Science development grant related to multimedia instruction in teacher preparation coursework related to classroom management. She is also a co-principal investigator on CT-STEM Pop-Ups4all: An RPP for Agile Learning (Dr. Danielle Herro, PI). This is a three-year National Science Foundation, Research-Practitioner Partnership grant.
Mya Kelley, MA, CCC-SLP
Mya Kelley, MA, CCC-SLP, is a third-year doctoral student in Special Education at
Clemson University. Before beginning her journey as a doctoral student, she worked as a speech-language
pathologist in public schools and in pediatric rehabilitation settings.
Her research explores how preservice and in-service teachers can be more equipped to use equitable instructional practices to improve academic and behavioral student outcomes. Her research also aims to discover effective strategies for supporting families and students of color navigating special education in public schools.
She received her bachelor’s degree from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg and her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the symposium, participants will:
- Describe steps for creating clear and culturally responsive routines, procedures and expectations for students
- Discuss strategies for recognizing and rewarding student behavior
- Identify methods for systematizing classroom management practices
- Identify supports to sustain implementation of behavior management practices to foster equitable outcomes

Continuing Education Units
Participants may apply for CEUs depending on their professional designation.
Attendees are eligible to receive 6 Arkansas Department of Education CEUs.
Attendees are eligible to receive up to 6 CEUs from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.
This course is offered for up to 0.6 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional Area)
by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Assocation.
Satisfactory Completion of Course
If you are seeking ADE, BCBA and ASHA CEUs, you must complete the self-assessment/session evaluation form for each session you attend. This form will be located in your event folder along with specific instructions for completion. Participants seeking BCBA and ASHA CEUs must sign in and out for each session attended with the designated person.

Refunds and Cancellation Policy
A registration can be transferred to another participant up until the day of the symposium. To transfer a registration please email the symposium administrator with the name of the original registrant and the name of person attending in their place.
Dissatisfied with the event? Our goal is to provide the best continuing education experiences possible for our participants. Individuals who are dissatisfied with the continuing education provided, including advertising, are encouraged to contact us via email to attempt to resolve any issues. Please make sure to share your positive and negative experiences on the end-of-day evaluation.
No Show
If a registration has been made, fees paid and no request for transfer provided, registration fees will not be refunded or credited toward a future event.
Inclement Weather and Event Cancellation
Should inclement weather prevent an event from occurring on the scheduled date or circumstances require cancellation of the event, we will attempt to reschedule it. If the registrant still chooses to participate on the event's new date, all fees as well as cancellation policies will apply to the rescheduled event. Due to expenses incurred to host the symposium, if we cannot reschedule the symposium, a refund minus a processing fee of $30 will be given to the registrant.
No-show, no transfer or registrants who cannot attend due to inclement weather in their area will incur a 100 percent registration fee charge.
