My research undertakes a critical feminist and anthropological approach to the study of peace-building processes. I am particularly interested in delving into social dynamics of violence and peace and the intersection with emotions, silences and bodily memory. I have conducted ethnographic research in Northern Ireland, the Basque Country and Colombia. My research has developed a critique of, and offers an alternative to, conceptions of post- ceasefire processes in terms of orthodox peace-building discourse, as ‘post-conflict’, seeking ‘reconciliation’, and centred on recognition of the experiences of the ‘victims of terrorism’.

From the starting point of my refusal to stay with discomfort in the process of writing an academic article, I put into question how easily we can drag ourselves into the same power structures that we criticise. Exploring my own discomfort leads me to delve into the violence

Este artículo explora los marcos narrativos de configuración de la memoria tras el alto al fuego de ETA en el contexto del conflicto armado vasco. En el marco institucional, la representación pública del sufrimiento configura la categoría de víctima en este contexto, jerarquizando experiencias de violencia y generando un determinado paisaje emocional "post-conflicto". Dadas las limitaciones de las representaciones sufrientes y el problemático uso del concepto de empatía en la eliminación de las violencias, sugiero el planteamiento de "escucha vulnerable" como propuesta analítica y política. Esta propuesta trata de ampliar los limitados paradigmas de reconciliación, resalta la importancia de poner la vulnerabilidad en el centro y muestra distintas formas de encuentro en donde la escucha está impregnada de emociones encontradas, contradicciones, complejos tejidos de sufrimiento y placer, incertidumbres y aperturas al reconocimiento de distintas formas de violencia.

Secondly, I illustrate the need to critically examine this concept through analyzing the experiences of people involved in the punk scene in Northern Ireland.

Capitulo del libro Euskadi Después de la Violencia, el cual analiza desde diferentes perspectivas ideológicas y meto-dológicas el proceso de paz en Euskadi o la situación post ETA. Lo hace a través del abordaje de las cuestiones clave del post conflicto, como son las políticas de víctimas, la justicia restaurativa y transicional, la li-bertad de expresión, el desarme y la desaparición de ETA, el impacto de la violencia en la sociedad y, finalmente, la educación para la paz y los derechos humanos, la convivencia, la memoria y la reconstrucción del tejido social.
Dichas cuestiones son examinadas principalmente desde una vertien-te jurídica que enlaza con la óptica de personas expertas en otras ramas del conocimiento, como la antropología, la historia, la ciencia política, la educación o la ética. Los artículos que se presentan son intencionada-mente breves y combinan el rigor con un formato ágil y accesible para cualquier público interesado en la materia, y tienen como objetivo ge-neral contribuir a conformar una opinión pública libre y crítica en temas de transcendencia social.

This chapter argues for the need to bring ethnographic detail of the everyday to reconciliation studies. It examines the concept and practice of friendship in a 'post-conflict' scenario through the analysis of the group 'Women of the Peace Line', formed by women from Catholic/Nationalist and Protestant/Unionist backgrounds in Belfast. This social space problematizes divisions in Northern Ireland, challenging fixed conceptualisations of communal and gender identities. Elements such as enjoyment, support and trust are highlighted in this exploration as significant aspects in the diverse paths towards positive peace and social transformation.

As part of my current research, which analyses gender dynamics underlying the reconciliation process in the Basque Country, I am interested in looking at the intersection of feminist theories and peace and conflict studies. In this paper, I will first analyse the different challenges that feminist scholars and practitioners have posed to peacebuilding policies and literature. Secondly, and linked to that, I will examine the understanding of violence from feminist perspectives. Finally, I will explore potential conceptualisations of peace drawing on reconciliation studies and feminist theories.

The discussion about the categorization of a film as ‘ethnographic’, attending to its characteristics and whether or not is being made by a trained ethnographer, has been ‘hotly debated’ (Ruby, 2005: 159) among scholars, specifically from the area of visual anthropology. This essay will focus on the possibilities of the intertwining between anthropology and cinema. First, I will expose the different views on the ethnographic value of films. Second, I will draw on two examples of films made by Mercedes Álvarez and Agnès Varda, directors that have contributed to the innovation of the documentary genre, in order to analyse and synthesize their possible contributions to the discipline of anthropology. Lastly, I will consider the possibilities of the conversation between ethnography and film.

El amor romántico es objeto de análisis en este trabajo por haberse constituido en base de la organización de parentesco en nuestra sociedad, base también de las relaciones entre sexos y de la configuración de la identidad de género. Indagamos en su génesis y evolución y con ello en el recorrido histórico de las relaciones de parentesco conectadas con el contexto socioeconómico. Estudiar el amor, estudiar los sentimientos, ha sido un campo poco explorado por la Antropologia hasta hace pocos años, cuando empieza a concebirse como un objeto de estudio por ser parte del análisis cultural, entendiendo la cultura más allá de las prácticas públicas, colectivas y simbólicas. Las autoras y autores que hemos recogido en este trabajo realizan la importante aportación de entender la cultura como marco de las experiencias emocionales, experiencias que son nombradas, limitadas en su intensidad, normadas y simbolizadas desde la cultura. Aportaciones que des- psicologizan y des-esencializan los sentimientos, los desnaturalizan por tanto y los hacen aparecer como un elemento de análisis importante para comprender la cultura a la que nos aproximamos, sus instituciones, sus prácticas, sus discursos, sus simbolos, sus valores.

Relatos anómalos sobre el conflicto armado vasco, en los que se enuncian violencias invisibilizadas, y donde los encuentros desestabilizan la homogeneidad y los estereotipos del enemigo, rompiendo las divisiones establecidas. Calla y olvida recoge experiencias de mujeres que quiebran el silencio, reivindican la memoria y el reconocimiento en actos de resistencia, frente al mandato del callar y olvidar.

Su propuesta da voz a mujeres resistentes que experimentan la construcción de solidaridades con quienes no forman parte de su mundo. Ofrecer claves al profesorado desde la experiencia educativa para empezar a cambiar la mirada es la pretensión de este libro. Para ello, las autoras han conversado con maestras, educadoras, profesoras y profesores cuya experiencia desafía la gravedad de lo normativo y nos proponen nuevas formas de hacer. Partiendo de la idea de que chicas y chicos tienen realidades diferentes, se han socializado de manera distinta y experimentan sus vivencias y aprendizajes de forma singular; a lo largo de estas páginas se entiende la coeducación como una teoría y una metodología transversal que penetra en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje e invita, a través de escenas de prácticas educativas reales, a reflexionar sobre el sexismo y la homofobia, que se cuelan en las prácticas docentes de manera sutil y cotidiana. Being with discomfort: Exploring ethnographic unsettling as conceptual and political praxes.
Attention to emotions and affects as ways of knowing has been widely discussed and firmly established in feminist and poststructuralist scholarship (e.g. Jaggar 1989, Behar 1996, Fischer 2016, Gregg & Seigworth 2010), as well as in in the context of ethnographic research (Navaro-Yashin 2003, Abu-Lughod & Lutz 1990). Nevertheless, few scholars have paid sustained attention to discomfort. The potential that the shift discomfort can produce for questioning set ways of knowing, privileges, and encounters with ‘others’ (Zembylas, 2013; Slater, 2016) are recognised in philosophy and pedagogy. However, discomfort is not always transformative (Applebaum 2017), and can have a negative influence on bodies. In this panel we would like to explore discomfort as a concept, praxis, emotion and/or affective assemblage.
We call for interrogating discomfort, disturbances, troubles, that we may encounter from fieldwork design to writing, performance and representations of our research. We would like to examine these both in methodological terms as well as in relation to conceptual work, to examine together what an analysis of discomfort can offer for questioning socio-cultural matrices that our research is part of, and to politicize our practices. How is discomfort experienced, by which/what bodies and in what context? How do we work with relationships in the field that are overwhelming, unpleasant, unsettling? How might we navigate this unsettling and transform it into methodological and political power? Can an analysis that attends to discomfort contribute to questioning methodological practices based in empathy (Hamilton, 2008; Cavarero 2014)? How might such analyses open conceptual frames for vulnerability, silence(s), or the performativity of our research? How can discomfort and related concepts give meaning to questions of power, memory, conflict, recognition or commoning? This panel invites contributions from different perspectives and conceptual starting points to jointly reflect on and work through ways of navigating, analysing and being with discomfort as a political and theoretical wager.

" The Sixties " continue to engage scholars from many disciplines in debates over what exactly changed; and, indeed, whether the various protest movements were in fact radical at all in their political demands. Both nostalgically celebrated as a revolutionary heyday and lamented as a failed political project, the decade continues to haunt veterans and preoccupy scholars fifty years on. However, these long-‐held evaluations remain parochially centred on European and North American experiences in a handful of cities in this tumultuous decade. Crucially, a Third Worldist perspective, despite its centrality for activists in the 1960s, is conspicuously marginalized in today's scholarship. It has been argued—and demonstrated—that decolonisation struggles and anti-‐imperialist resistance spanning the three continents of the Global South, from Cuba to Algeria and all the way to Vietnam, both politically informed a new generation of contestation and offered a new radical horizon of Leftist internationalism. And yet " The Sixties " continues to be universalised on the basis of myopically " Western " speculations about what makes radical politics possible.
This conference thus seeks to decentre the established loci of " The Sixties ". It builds on recent efforts to expand and complicate the spatiality and temporality of the global sixties and calls for new analyses of this critical historical conjuncture from the standpoint of solidarity. For today we seem to know very little about how solidarity constituted a nodal theme for radical Leftist politics in the 1960s; its intellectual frameworks and transnational politics, associated aesthetics and cultures of circulation. How was solidarity conceived, imagined and radically enacted in the border-‐crossings, both spatial and intellectual, of revolutionaries in the " long " 1960s?
We invite contributions from any discipline that explore notions and manifestations of solidarity as articulated in the interstices that, more than 50 years ago, opened up shared spaces of political struggle and prefigured radical horizons of possibility. In particular, we seek explorations of solidarity as expressed in new aesthetic modes of transnational dissent and carried through the circulatory practices of radical cultures and associated flow of new revolutionary subjectivities.

" The Sixties " continue to engage scholars from many disciplines in debates over what exactly changed; and, indeed, whether the various protest movements were in fact radical at all in their political demands. Both nostalgically celebrated as a revolutionary heyday and lamented as a failed political project, the decade continues to haunt veterans and preoccupy scholars fifty years on. However, these long-‐held evaluations remain parochially centred on European and North American experiences in a handful of cities in this tumultuous decade. Crucially, a Third Worldist perspective, despite its centrality for activists in the 1960s, is conspicuously marginalized in today's scholarship. It has been argued—and demonstrated—that decolonisation struggles and anti-‐imperialist resistance spanning the three continents of the Global South, from Cuba to Algeria and all the way to Vietnam, both politically informed a new generation of contestation and offered a new radical horizon of Leftist internationalism. And yet " The Sixties " continues to be universalised on the basis of myopically " Western " speculations about what makes radical politics possible.
This conference thus seeks to decentre the established loci of " The Sixties ". It builds on recent efforts to expand and complicate the spatiality and temporality of the global sixties and calls for new analyses of this critical historical conjuncture from the standpoint of solidarity. This paper draws on feminist literature and field research carried out as part of my current doctoral project that examines the reconciliation process in the Basque Country from a feminist perspective. I am exploring the concept of ‘practices of peace’ on three different levels and for multiple purposes. First, the use of the concept of ‘practices of peace’ might challenge standardised understandings rooted in peace and conflict studies. It is also applied as a proposal in approaching feminist epistemology. Finally, it is a main research question for the data analysis. The concept of practices of peace challenges both a patriarchal devalued notion of peace seen as unattainable and essentialist understandings of women being as naturally peaceful. Peace is deemed hence not as an idealised concept, but as a practice. It

Drawing on my current research about the reconciliation process in the Basque Country, this paper will trace the different spaces of acknowledgment and recognition in this so-called “post-conflict” context. I will analyse specifically the spaces promoted by different institutions, from encounters among victims, reports on human rights violations, to exhibitions and museums. Some of the questions to be explored include: what actors and practices are involved in the creation and maintenance of these spaces, what voices and social representations are displayed, what are the implications of that selection and categorisation in narratives of the past and current public discourses, how acknowledgement and recognition are related to one another and what that means in a contested time when the struggle over accounts of the past is a main concern in the sociopolitical present.

This paper is based on my doctoral project, which develops a critical feminist approach to the concept and practice of reconciliation in the Basque Country, drawing on feminist theories and gender studies in relation to peace and conflict studies. The Basque case, one of the last examples of nationalist armed conflict in Europe, is going through a unique moment of reconciliation without a formal, signed peace agreement. Its analysis has important implications for enhancing understanding of social and discursive dynamics in ‘post-conflict’ situations and the gendered power relations involved in reconciliation processes. The ethnographic approach taken for this study has focused on different groups and people that hold diverse positions in relation to the socio-political process coming after the armed group ETA set a permanent ceasefire in 2011.

This paper draws on feminist literature and field research carried out as part of my current doctoral project that examines the reconciliation process in the Basque Country from a feminist perspective. It aims to explore practices of peace in a way that challenges both a patriarchal devalued notion of peace seen as unattainable and essentialist understandings of women being as naturally peaceful. In the context of heteropatriarchal capitalism, I argue that practices of peace might be working as practices of resistance. Paying attention to those practices not just in so-called ‘post conflict’ scenarios, but in daily life, could give us feminists more clues about how relationships might develop in the creation of forms of resistance, where another world possible might become thinkable.

Desde agosto de 2016 a abril de 2017 llevé a cabo el trabajo de campo de la tesis que tiene como título Mujeres y reconciliación en el País Vasco: un análisis feminista del impacto de las dinámicas de género en una sociedad “post-conflicto”, dirigida desde la Universidad de Brighton (Reino Unido).
En esta ponencia reflexiono de forma crítica sobre la perspectiva feminista que he aplicado durante y después de mi estancia en el País Vasco, donde utilicé metodología etnográfica e historia oral.
Las búsquedas desde un feminismo de vida y un feministo teórico-espistemológico serán parte de esta reflexión. Las contradicciones que surgen en la investigación antropológica, metologías que a veces no encajan con las relaciones que buscamos fomentar. Sentirse encorsetada a veces, otras sin límites que equilibren las ganas de conocer con el exceso que se carga sobre el cuerpo. De encuentros y desencuentros con una misma, con las otras, y con la academia. Ideas que buscan ser compartidas para generar debates que enriquezcan esa mirada feminista con la que estamos cada día en diálogo.

In this paper, I critically analyse different approaches to peacebuilding and reconciliation, drawing on peace studies, feminist theories and my own ethnographic research in so-called post-conflict scenarios such as Northern Ireland and the Basque Country. I will question and challenge the narratives that are shaping reconciliation as a concept and as a practice, both in the academia and on the ground, and how those narratives might be perpetuating violence even in an attempt to overcome it.
In this analysis, the concept of ‘pacification’ might prove useful in order to reflect on the new order that is being legitimised through discourses referring to the need to oppose and overcome violence after an armed conflict. Pacification as a mechanism that produces meanings that must be assumed by those who do not want to be excluded from the new stage of ‘equilibrium’ of a “post-conflict” society. In examining these meanings we might question what violence is becoming visible on reconciliation processes and reconciliation studies, what violences are left unaddressed and unshaken, what practices on the field might be disrupting linear and hermetic accounts of peacebuilding and reconciliation. These and other questions might be raised in order to develop critical examinations of violence(s) and peace and to not get trapped in the same logic of the liberal order that sustains violence before, during and after armed conflicts.

El análisis de un grupo de mujeres 'cross-community', de procedencia católica y protestante, en Irlanda del Norte me ha permitido discutir ciertas categorías utilizadas en procesos que suceden a la violencia, y que expondré en esta comunicación. La mirada etnográfica sobre espacios poco explorados, como el lugar creado por la amistad para cuestionar no sólo divisiones identitarias, sino también roles de género, se ha revelado como importante en esta investigación. La atención a estas prácticas generadas desde la comunidad permite explorar cómo la dicotomía de lo público y lo privado, lo político y lo personal, sigue marcando las dinámicas dinámicas en procesos de reconciliación, en las actuaciones institucionales y en la propia percepción de sus protagonistas.
Esta comunicación nos acercará al espacio de encuentro de estas mujeres, analizando la complejidad del encuentro entre diferentes, los valores que ponen en juego, su ambigua relación con las identidades comunitarias que marcaron un largo y violento conflicto, las estrategias, bloqueos y transformaciones que experimentan. Asímismo, planteará la necesidad de atender a procesos socio-culturales e inter-personales como los relativos a la amistad, las relaciones de apoyo y cuidado, y las emociones en el estudio de conflicto y reconciliación.

Drawing on the ethnographic study that I carried out in Northern Ireland with a group of women from the Protestant/Unionist and Catholic/Nationalist communities, this presentation analyses the connections between friendship and reconciliation and, following feminist theories, suggests the blurring of the boundaries of the private/personal and public/political sphere. Exploring the diverse motivations that move the participants of the group to meet each other every week, the negotiations that take place in the maintenance of their bonds, the transformation they have experienced, different questions about the need to bring the political impact of ‘the everyday’ into focus emerge.
This presentation highlights the importance to include in the analysis of reconciliation processes not just those groups that situate themselves in the traditional political domain, but also the initiatives that are contributing to a positive peace under the banner of privacy and enjoyment. The blurring of these restrictive domains might be useful for a broader analytical approach to social reality.
