Virtual visits

A virtual visit is similar to an in-person doctor visit, except you’re using a live video and audio connection from a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Your primary care doctor or specialist can diagnose and treat many common conditions and prescribe medications if necessary. You'll get the same quality medical care, but without traveling to the doctor's office.

Just like a regular visit, virtual visits are scheduled ahead of time. But for extra flexibility, you may be able to choose an earlier appointment time with another WellSpan primary care doctor, if your own doctor isn’t available right away.

Video visits with MyWellSpan

Don’t skip your doctor’s appointment! It’s easy to schedule a video session using MyWellSpan.

You can choose a video visit for many non-emergency conditions, including:

  • acne
  • anxiety, depression and mental health needs
  • allergies
  • asthma
  • annual wellness visits
  • back pain
  • chronic pain
  • cold and flu
  • cough
  • diarrhea
  • fever
  • fatigue
  • GERD or reflux
  • headaches
  • hives
  • hospital or ER follow-up
  • insect bites
  • lice
  • medication needs
  • pink eye
  • routine care or follow-up
  • sinusitis
  • smoking cessation
  • sore throat
  • specialty care follow-up
  • test results
  • urinary tract infection
  • vomiting

Please note that at the time of your video visit, you must be physically located in a state where your doctor is licensed to practice medicine. In most cases, our doctors are licensed only in Pennsylvania, although some are licensed in Maryland.

Be ready for your video visit

Step 1: Check your equipment

One to two days before your appointment, check your device's video camera and sound setup.

  • From your MyWellSpan account, open your video visit appointment.
  • From the Appointment Details screen, click Test Hardware.

Step 2: eCheck-in on MyWellSpan

One to two days before your appointment, eCheck-in to verify your demographic, insurance and health information.

Step 3: Get ready to start

Five minutes before your appointment, log into your MyWellSpan account, select Details on the virtual visit, then select Join Visit.

eVisits

Not all issues need a face-to-face visit. With the eVisit option in MyWellSpan, you can start a conversation with your doctor any time, day or night.

You'll answer a few simple questions and even attach a picture if needed. Then we can diagnose and even write you a prescription. Response time is usually within one business day. It all happens using secure messaging, so there's no appointment time.

Virtual on-demand care

You can have a video-based appointment wherever and whenever works for you, 24/7, using your smartphone, tablet or computer. Connect with a board-certified doctor in real time — our average wait time is about 15 minutes — to receive a diagnosis, treatment plan and prescription as needed. It's quality, convenient care that's also affordable.

Virtual care FAQs

Get answers to common questions about virtual care.

To use any of our virtual care options, you will need a MyWellSpan account.

For video visits, you’ll also need a/an:

  • smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer with a camera, microphone and speaker
  • reliable Internet connection or a secure, strong Wi-Fi connection
  • up-to-date browser, if using a computer (Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge)

Yes, both adults and children can get virtual care.

If possible, do an equipment check before a video appointment to make sure the camera and microphone are working well:

(If you’re having trouble with your equipment, contact MyWellSpan customer support at 866-638-1842, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.)

For video appointments, choose a quiet, private, well-lit location with a reliable Internet signal.

If you have a visible symptom like a rash, you may be able to take a picture ahead of time and upload it for the doctor to see.

Yes. Our virtual care options are all HIPAA-compliant. We use industry-standard encryption technology to secure all information shared during online visits and protect your personal health information.

It depends on what type of visit you choose.

  • For eVisits, yes — the form you complete will send a secure message to your WellSpan doctor for them to respond.
  • With virtual visits, generally yes — you’re making a future appointment with your doctor’s office, just like in person. The only difference is that you will have the visit online.
(Please note: If your primary care doctor does not have appointments available soon, you may be offered earlier appointment times with another WellSpan doctor.)
  • For virtual on-demand care, because you’re requesting a visit right away, you’ll be seen by the next available doctor and cannot choose who you see. But be assured you’ll receive the same high level of care you’ve come to expect from your regular WellSpan doctor.

With all virtual care types, the details of your visit will be added to your electronic health record for your doctor to review in the future. Additionally, if you choose virtual on-demand care, the doctor who sees you will be able to review your past records in real time to help care for you.

Because virtual video care uses newer technology, there's a chance that it won't connect.

Also, there are some things the doctor can only do in person, so you may still need to have follow-up care in person.

If you have a virtual visit scheduled with a primary care doctor or specialist, call the doctor’s office for help.

If you have questions about virtual on-demand care, call the help desk at 888-805-0085 for support any time.
