You can now register to vote online through the North Carolina DMV. Use your NC Driver’s License or DMV-issued ID card number to register.

Download the voter registration form, and return it to the Lenoir County Board of Elections office in-person or by mail at least twenty-five (25) days before the election. Their address is 110 South Herritage Street, #C, Kinston, NC 28501.

WHERE AND WHEN DO I VOTE?

There are six One Stop/Early Voting sites in Lenoir County.

Five of these sites are in Kinston, and one is in La Grange. Polls are open Monday through Friday 8AM until 7:30PM.

During One Stop/Early Voting, you can register to vote on site if you are not already registered.

WHAT AND WHO IS ON MY BALLOT?

County Commissioners, School Board, Sheriff, District Attorney, Judges, and State & Federal Legislative seats are on the ballot in this election. Here’s what they do:

COUNTY COMMISSIONERS: pass the budget that funds important departments including the Lenoir County Board of Elections, Health Department, Sheriff’s Department, recreation programs, school system, and more.

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS: are in charge of governing the Lenoir County Public Schools system, approve and fund school construction, closures, renovation and management, and make important school personnel decisions.

SHERIFFS: manage the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, provide security at the Lenoir County Jail and Courthouse and oversee daily conditions of the jails and inmates in custody, provide school resource officers for schools in the county, and serve warrants and eviction notices.

DISTRICT ATTORNEYS: decide what crimes to prosecute, whether a person will be prosecuted and on what charge, and if people are diverted into special programs to avoid criminal records. Their decisions are final. Our District Attorney covers Lenoir, Greene and Wayne counties.

JUDGES: decide who gets detained and for how long, and who goes to prison, and for how long. Our local judges cover Lenoir, Greene, and Wayne counties, and there are also statewide judges on the ballot.

CONGRESS & NC LEGISLATURE: They make laws on nearly every aspect of society; from healthcare and health insurance, to education and public safety. Reproductive healthcare, marijuana legalization, access to health insurance, immigration, and school safety have all been important legislative issues in their most recent sessions.

HOW DO I VOTE BY MAIL?

Play it safe – don’t wait! Voting experts recommend requesting and submitting your absentee-by-mail ballot at least two weeks prior to the formal deadlines. Request your ballot now, vote, and return your ballot as soon as you receive it!

Step One: Submit an absentee ballot request form

You can submit your request application to the Lenoir County Board of Elections online, by hand, and you can send it in by mail.

If you are unable to use the online portal to download and print an absentee ballot request form, you can request one from the Lenoir County Board of Elections.

Step Two: Vote!

After sending in your absentee ballot request application, an absentee ballot will be mailed to you. You must complete your absentee ballot in front of one notary public or two witnesses (who should NOT violate your privacy.)

Once your ballot is completed, do these three things before your return it according to the North Carolina Secretary of State:

  1. Seal the ballot in the return envelope provided.

  2. Complete and sign the Absentee Application and Certificate on the return envelope.

  3. Have two witnesses (or one notary public) complete and sign the return envelope in the space designated as Witness’s Certification. (Anyone over 18 years old can serve as a witness.)

Step 3: Return your absentee ballot

Remember - experts recommend to complete and return your ballot as soon as you receive it. To send back your ballot, you can:

  • Deliver it in person to your county board of elections by 5 PM on Election Day,

  • Deliver it in person to an early voting site during the early voting period, OR

  • Mail it to your county board of elections using a 60-cent stamp with the envelope postmarked by 5 PM on Election Day. Your absentee ballot must ARRIVE by the Friday after Election Day at 5 PM to count.
