All of these rewarding benefits are just a few of the perks of working as an aide for the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation’s (DPR) popular Summer Fun Program!

To get a head start on recruiting the hundreds of staff needed to make this program a success, DPR is now accepting applications for adults interested in working for the 2024 Summer Fun Program. Contracts for the seasonal workers are from May 22 through August 3, 2024.

You can choose from five different positions, at dozens of Summer Fun sites across the island, offering between $16/hour and $19.14/hour. Not only is this a fun and dynamic opportunity to work with kids and gain experience in the childcare and recreation industries, becoming part of the Summer Fun staff is now easier than ever with applications being accepted online!

The 2024 Summer Fun Program is scheduled to run from June 10 through July 26, 2024. An updated list of 2024 Summer Fun sites, along with keiki registration dates and additional program details, will be announced later. 

 

Purpose of the Program

The City and County of Honolulu, Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for 500 responsible, qualified and enthusiastic adults to work for the largest children’s Summer Fun program on Oahu!  Help make a difference in the lives of our keiki while working up to 40 hours a week this summer. 

Through our Summer Fun Program, we plan to develop and nurture the following skills in our keiki:

  • Teamwork Building (through sports and games)
  • Leadership
  • Group Dynamics and Social Interaction
  • Imagination and Individuality
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Outdoor fun and physical development
  • Self Esteem Building

Available Positions

Summer Student Aide II: 

Arts and Crafts Summer Fun 2020

  • Work Contract Period: 05/22/2024 – 08/03/2024 
  • Summer Fun Program Dates: 06/10/2024 - 07/26/2024 (excluding holidays on 05/27, 06/11. & 07/04)
  • Full-time employment. Approximately 336 hours of service. 
  • Rate of Pay: $16/hr.
  • This position will assist the Recreation Director in conducting activities for children (group of 25) and teenagers. Conduct games, sports, arts and crafts, music and dance, creative drama. Take children and teens on excursions.  Keep statistics, develop lesson plans for activities, general clean up and prepare evaluation reports. This position would have direct contact with or be in authority over children.
  • Requirements:
    • Possession of valid American Red Cross First Aid Certificate.
    • High School graduate or equivalent by June 2024.
    • Currently at least a half-time college student in good standing OR intend to continue your college education in Fall 2024.
    • Completed at least one full year (24 credits) of college by end of June 2024.

Summer Student Aide III

  • Full-time employment. Approximately 336 hours of service. 
  • Rate of Pay: $17.50/hr.
  • This position must have at least one year of Summer Fun program experience with DPR. Assist the Recreation Director in conducting activities for children (group of 25) and teenagers.  Conduct games, sports, arts and crafts, music and dance, creative drama.  Take children and teens on excursions.  Keep statistics, develop lesson plans for activities, general clean up and prepare evaluation reports.  This position would have direct contact with or be in authority over children.
  • Requirements:
    • Possession of valid American Red Cross First Aid Certificate.
    • High School graduate or equivalent by June 2024.
    • Currently at least a half-time college student in good standing OR intend to continue your college education in Fall 2024.
    • Completed at least one full year (24 credits) of college by end of June 2024.
    • Satisfactorily performed at least one year of Summer Fun program work as a Student Aide II for DPR.

Summer Swim Aide  Underwater Parks and Recreation Lifeguard Picture

  • Work Contract Period: 05/22/2024 – 08/03/2024
  • Summer Fun Program Dates: 06/10/2024 - 07/26/2024 (excluding holidays on 05/27, 06/11. & 07/04)
  • Full-time and part-time employment available.
  • Rate of Pay: $17.69/hr.
  • This position will assist the Pool Manager in planning and implementing a swimming program at an assigned swimming pool or Ocean Recreation Program. He/she will conduct learn-to-swim classes, perform lifeguarding duties, organize swimming activities, provide general assistance to regular staff, keep statistics, open and close facilities, work evening and weekends and prepare reports.  This position will also perform light custodial duties to include restocking restroom supplies, emptying trash, cleaning of restrooms and showers.  This position would have direct contact with or be in a position of authority over children.
  • Requirements:
    • Possession of current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.
    • Experience with children and teens.
    • These position are available to applicants 16 years or older!

Recreation Assistant II (Therapeutic Recreation - TR)

  • On-call not to exceed 40 hours per week.
  • Rate of Pay: $19.14/hr.
  • The Recreation Assistant II (TR) is trained to work with persons with disabilities and is needed to facilitate communication between the department, participant, parent and others to encourage consistency between home, school and/or work, and the program. The position will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title II, to provide reasonable modifications and access for persons with disabilities.  Encourage and foster independence, allowing the participant to do as much as possible without assistance.  Prepare and maintain records and reports as needed.  This position would have direct contact with or be in authority over children.
  • Requirements:
    • Possession of current American Red Cross First Aid Certificate or equivalent and American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED Certificate, to include care for choking and obstructed airway or equivalent.
    • High School graduate or equivalent.
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with persons with disabilities.
    • Have basic knowledge in the following areas: disability, behavior management, alternate formats and program access for persons with disabilities upon request and as deemed necessary.

The following are brief descriptions of some additional types of jobs you may be assigned as part of summer employment in the Department of Parks and Recreation:  

Gym Program

Our gyms aren’t just for working out, they’re all about having fun! Those assigned to these positions will assist in making facilities and services available to the public at our park gymnasiums during the summer.  Duties include: opening and closing the facilities, enforcing permits and regulations, and answering the telephone. In addition gym staff perform custodial duties to maintain a safe and healthy facility. These positions have direct contact with children. 

Day Camp Program

Kualoa Regional Park offers day camp programs to the Summer Fun Programs.  Day Camp Counselors conduct Ocean Recreation activities, arts & crafts, songs, nature walks, and Hawaiiana activities.  This position will entail leadership and supervision of children in an outdoor setting.  Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications are required upon employment.
