Parndon Wood Nature Reserve, Harlow - a place for nature and people

Set on the southern outskirts of Harlow, Parndon Wood is an “ancient woodland”. The site is designated a Special Site for Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its flora and value as an educational resource.

The wood is composed of oak tree standards with hornbeam that been coppiced every 10-15 years to make use of the timber. This practice is still carried out, though more to keep a diversity of habitats within the woodland and increase the number of species to be found. The reserve is a haven for flora, fungi, birds, minibeasts, small mammals and deer and is a beautiful and peaceful place to wander were visitors are more than welcome!

Visitors can follow our well marked guided trail which has gentle inclines, and there are observation hides and seats to sit quietly to watch the wildlife. A fully accessible boardwalk overlooks a pond and dipping platform and we have a fully accessible conservation centre with toilets, exhibition room, leaflets and displays for those who wish to know more.

In April 2012 the partnership with ECCO Ltd was launched with the aim of providing free play opportunities for young people in the natural environment and provide a wide range of events and activities throughout the year. ECCO have a café where refreshments can be purchased.
