Join us for this year's UN
World Environment Day celebration, hosted in the beautiful city of New Orleans!
World Environment Day is the United Nations' flagship day for promoting global awareness and action for the environment. This year's theme is Beat Plastic Pollution - a call to action for all of us around the world to come together and fight one of the great environmental challenges of our time, marine litter.
At the morning's speakers event, attendees will learn the commitments to tackle marine litter and plastic pollution announced by policymakers, private sector leaders, organizations, and community members alike. Featured speakers include: UN Goodwill Ambassador Adrian Grenier, the Mayor of New Orleans, and other senior public officials (TBC), Mayors and state legislators from the Mississippi River Corridor, the UN Environment North America Director, youth leaders from the
Ocean Heroes Boot Camp, and public and private sector representatives.
For the afternoon's event, we're taking it to the streets! A second line celebration will lead us from the Historic Carver Theater to the Zulu Hall, where we'll gather to launch an urban cleanup. We will collect and catalog litter and raise awareness of the connection between land-based litter sources and the plastic pollution crisis facing the world's waters, including the Gulf of Mexico.
All participants will receive a light breakfast and lunch and a take-home souvenir to remember the day and participate in future waste prevention efforts.

NOPD Takes Part in Free Aquatic Training for First Responders
NEW ORLEANS - leadership from the NOPD, along with NOFD and EMS, accepted a generous offer of free swim training for New Orleans First Responders at Dryades YMCA Aquatic and Wellness Center.
In the wake of First District Officer Brian Frank's heroic act of rescuing a driver from flood water under the Carrollton over pass on Friday, May 18, 2018, local leaders demonstrated their commitment to First Responders by creating an initiative that gives officers access to the tools they need to serve and protect.
Councilmember Jay Banks of District B partnered with the Draydes YMCA and the Helis Foundation to launch an aquatic program that will improve the officers' lifesaving tactics. Officers will be allowed to receive free aquatic training at their leisure.
"I encourage all officers to take part in such a great opportunity. We are always working to be better and this program will give us the tools that we need to help our community," said Officer Frank.
While summer does not officially start until few weeks, we are getting some summer vibes from the market these days. Tables are overflowing with yellow, green, and golden squash, bright and bulbous eggplant, spicy (and sweet) peppers, and all the creole tomatoes you could ever want. We are happy to finally catch a break from the root veggies in exchange for tender first of the season okra, summer squash, and fresh onions. And while we can never get enough Ponchatoula strawberries, we are ready to welcome melons, peaches, and plums. This explosion of summer veg is just in time for the Eat Local Challenge, making local sourcing easy peasy lemon squeezy. Check out all five of our weekly markets for a variety of produce, fresh fruit, and locally made staples!

Hosted by Crescent City Farmers Market as part of the Eat Local Challenge which challenges you to go 30 days in Juneeating only foods grown, caught, raised or foraged within a 200 mile radius of New Orleans to raise awareness of the nutritional, economical, environmental and cultural benefits of eating locally sourced foods.
VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Penn Travis, Indian Springs Farmers Association Co-op
Late last week, we lost one of our beloved vendors, Donnie "Penn" Travis of Indian Springs Farmers Association Cooperative. Mr. Penn was an important part of our market and the familiar face we will miss seeing as we pick up our purple hulled peas or spicy boiled peanuts. We are truly at a loss of words and our hearts ache for the family of Mr. Penn and his community in Hattiesburg, MS, where he was known as "The Greens Man." There was never a day that we didn't see this man smile and ask "how you doing cher?" Tuesday market will be a sad day but we will keep our spirits high as we reflect on the laughs and memories that Mr. Penn left behind, as he would want us to do.
Donnie "Penn" Travis 1952 - 2018
All services will take place at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 131 Walter Myers Road in Petal, MS 39465. A wake will be held on Friday June 8th from 6-8pm, viewing on Saturday June 9th from 9-11 followed by the funeral from 11-12.
If you'd like to make a donation to the family, we will be accepting them through the Crescent Fund. All donations will go directly to the family.
TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:South of Eden
This month we welcome South of Eden to the Green Plate Special line up, and to the Crescent City Farmers Market. South of Eden is a plant based pop-up and new CCFM vendor. Founded in the belief that food should be tasty, satisfying and nourishing, everything on offer is created to be just that. As the Green Plate Special vendor, we'll be treated to breakfast and lunch made from entirely whole ingredients (no processed ingredients will be found in any item), locally sourced when possible. You can also pick up vegan breads, sauces, cheeses, dips, jams, ferments and more at the GPS table in June, and then at their regular market table at the Tuesday Uptown Market beginning in July. What a great addition to the market!
RECIPE OF THE WEEK:Soupe de Pêches Blanches
This is probably one of the best (and easiest) recipes to prepare and enjoy. This chilled peach soup from Mimi Thorisson is light, sweet, refreshing and perfect for sanctuary from a sunny afternoon. Grab some Chilton County Peaches from the market (starting tomorrow) and some ice cream from Country Girls Creamery or G&M Goat Farm and you are set.

Dinner, Drinks, and Louisiana's Rum History with Elizabeth Pearce and Bayou Rum
Join drinks historian Elizabeth Pearce as she regales you with the story of rum's three hundred year old presence in New Orleans. From the city's early days as a French colony through Prohibition and World War II, New Orleanians have sipped the golden nectar of the sugar cane.
In attendance will be Founder, Trey Litel, Distiller, Jeff Murphy, and Master Blender Reiniel Vicente of the award winning Bayou Rum Distillery. They are bringing a very special treat with them - their 5 year aged rum that was created in tribute to New Orleans 300 year anniversary. Dickie Brennan and Bayou Rum founder, Trey Litel dreamed up the idea of this special expression in 2013, and this is its debut public appearance. There is a very limited supply with only 300 bottles of Bayou 300 Special Barrel Reserve allocated for release.

In honor of New Orleans' tricentennial, M.S. Rau Antiques is pleased to present Vice & Virtue: An Exhibition of Sex, Saints and Sin. The exhibition explores the universal struggle between virtue and vice, with a nod to New Orleans' Catholic heritage and its infamous culture of celebration, indulgence and excess. Featuring fine art and rare objects from across history, the exhibit includes depictions of the pious and pure, alongside voyeurs, seductresses, and misbehaving cardinals. From torture masks to Brueghel masterpieces, Vice & Virtue is certain to delight, shock, and tempt the visitor.
The remarkable range of works slated for display have been chosen to reveal the dichotomous relationship between vice and virtue. They include: * An important work by Jean-Léon Gérôme depicting the highly charged mythological tale of Leda and the Swan * A fascinating and macabre wolf head iron shame mask used in the Middle Ages to punish offenders * A superb painting entitled Praying Madonna by Sassoferrato * A collection of walking sticks including a prostitute's whip cane, a gambler's tap dice cane and a prohibition flask cane.

Wednesday Night Flights with Bubblyotheque, Full-Bodied Champagnes for Big-Flavored Cheeses & Pates, June 6, 2018, 5:30-7:30PM - In anticipation of our Pinot Noir based champagne class later this month, we're going to choose an array of Pinot-heavy, full-bodied champagnes that will stand up to bold cheeses and hearty pates. But don't worry, it's champagne - the bubbles and acidity will make you still want to drink them even as NOLA summer gets rolling. Stop by for a flight of 3 champagnes, presented by Michael Knisley, with cheese/pate pairings from Casey Foote. No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 3 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines and cheeses are available for purchase to have at Swirl or you can take them to go. You can reserve here Bubblyotheque

Wednesday Night Flights - Bandol, The Gem of Provence, June 13, 2018 - As the Provence rosé consumption craze continues to break records, it becomes harder and harder to find wines from the region that truly have a sense of place. The classic grapes of the area, cinsault, grenache and syrah are consistently blended to produce lovely aromatic wines but tend to lack a specific identity. There are a few exceptions to that and the hot, arid village of Bandol sits in the top spot for me. The reason for this distinction is directly related to the main grape, Mourvèdre. Mourvèdre has one of the longest growing cycles of any wine grape, making it ideally suited to the region's sunny, evenly warm climate. In our flight tonight David Sobiesk will present wines from three of the top producers in the region, Domaine Tempier, Domaine Gros Nore' and Domaine Terrebrune. He'll present 3 wines, a red, white and rosé, one from each producer while you learn what it is that makes this region so special. For those of you who are fans of Bandol, you know how difficult it is to get your hands on these wines so if you want to attend I HIGHLY suggest you make reservations as we will only pour 20 flights. We will also have a limited amount of these wines for sale that we will make available to attendees of the event before putting them on the shelves. If you'd like a little something to snack on with your wine, resident cheesemonger Casey Foote will select and present a regional pairing plate ($10 with flight, $15 without the flight). No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 4 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines are available for purchase to drink at Swirl or you can take them to go. pick blueberries on Louisiana, Mississippi farms
Many farms are a bit of a drive, so before heading out call, email or check the farm's website and/or Facebook page. Schedules can change based on the weather and berry availability, especially early and late in the season.
Here are other tips for pickers from area farmers:
Bring cash. Farmers prefer it; some only accept cash.
Don't eat as you pick. The price you pay is based on weight or the fullness of the container.
Wear sturdy shoes or rubber boots. Fields can get muddy. Some farms require closed-toed shoes. Watch for ants as you pick.
Bring insect repellent.
Wear sunscreen and a hat.
Bring your own containers, to be safe. Most farmers provide them; some don't.
Call ahead if you want to ensure that pre-picked berries will be available.
Go in the early morning or near sunset. Those are the most pleasant times of day.
Plan for half a day. The drive and picking take time. Most farmers say it takes an adult about a half-hour to 45 minutes to pick a gallon of berries.
Call before bringing the family dog. Most farms do not allow pets.

If caterpillars are creeping and termites are swarming, it must be time for Audubon Nature Institute's 2018 season of "Wild Nights'' and "Insect Adventures.''
Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is once again offering opportunities for up-close looks - during the day and after dark - at the amazing diversity of arthropods living among us.
"Ever wonder which marvelous moths and beautiful beetles are out and about at night,'' asks Zack Lemann, Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium's Animal and Visitor Programs Manager. "And what about the darting dragonflies and active ants that fly and crawl about during hot summer days? Then don't miss this chance to learn about all the fascinating bugs that inhabit south Louisiana.''
The insect safaris take place in Audubon Wilderness Park located at Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center in Lower Coast Algiers and Audubon Louisiana Nature Center in eastern New Orleans adjacent to Joe Brown Park.
Registration for "Insect Adventures'' includes an aerial net, while "Wild Nights'' guests receive a night headlamp and batteries. All participants receive a small insect collection kit and an exclusive "Wild Nights Insect Adventures'' collectible water bottle.
